Mark D. Haskell, 47, of Cremin Street in Concord, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at home.

He was born in Brookline, Mass., a son of the late Charles Haskell and Dale (Chiappini) Rosanna of Concord. He attended Silver Lake High School in Kingston, Mass.

Mark worked as a contractor for many years. He enjoyed playing darts and pool.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his children, Tayla Baker of Plymouth, Mass., and Rachel and Joshua Haskell of North Carolina; four sisters, Lauren Bosco of Epsom, Lynne Gould of Rochester, Mass., RaeAnn Horsman of Concord and Kelly Robie of Concord; a brother, Steven Haskell of Concord; aunts, uncles and cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial visiting hours will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St., Concord.

A memorial Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 S. Main St., Concord.

Mix of performance and great e

If you fancy a hot hatch that won't break the bank but will still put a smile on your face, then allow me to introduce you to the latest batch of hotshots from Seat.

The Spanish carmaker, which celebrated its 60th birthday in May, now offers its customers a choice of four hot hatches at the top of its well-regarded Ibiza range, which has been around for 25 years.

The cars we enjoy today though are very good and couldn't be more different from the early Ibizas - which weren't.

The four models are the FR, FR TDI CR, which I've been testing, the Cupra and Cupra Bocanegra. Three of the four come with a punchy 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with either 150 or 180PS and equipped with a seven-speed DSG gearbox, while the diesel version boasts the most powerful engine yet seen in an Ibiza and is, therefore, a worthy wearer of the FR badge.

Although this wasn't the car I was expecting to test this week, I soon realised I wasn't going to be disappointed.

On the contrary, for people who want performance on a budget, this car is almost the holy grail. It quickly became clear that it was quick and competent, but a flick through the trip computer revealed something I wasn't expecting - an average fuel consumption approaching 50mpg on my trip home through the rush-hour traffic - a figure most cars struggle to achieve on a long, steady motorway cruise.

The FR got an extensive test on all types of journeys an owner might subject it to, and did nothing but impress me every time, with its combination of performance and economy.

Hitting the 0-62 mph benchmark takes just 8.3 seconds, while its top speed is a potential 129mph. But its mid-range punch is where the most fun is to be had when its 320Nm of torque is unleashed. The engine revs well, doing a good impression of a petrol powerplant, propelling the car strongly through the gears, while A-road overtakes can be comfortably accomplished in fourth gear without any dramas.

I covered more than 550 miles in this car, which included a trip to London and back.

Driving it "enthusiastically" using higher revs than watches-n I would normally, and putting in plenty of overtakes, the car refused to concede on the economy front, steadfastly refusing to drop below 42mpg, while cruising at motorway speeds saw its trip computer claiming an overall average of 57mpg.

The return leg was quicker, thanks to lighter traffic, with an overall average of 53mpg.

During the entire test of around 550 miles, the car averaged a total of 52mpg, which I think is excellent, especially when you consider its C02 emissions are just 123g/km.

It's also a delight to drive. Not only is it quick, it handles well, the ride quality is just right and the car's responses to the driver's inputs at the steering wheel are exemplary. The six-speed manual box is light and precise to use, and the gear ratios well- chosen, which obviously helps to provide the best of both worlds for owners to enjoy.

The only negative points to report are a fair bit of road noise from the wide tyres, which one of my passengers commented on, and an annoying rattle from the roof lining, which the dealer would no doubt soon remedy.
