AND then there was one! South Devon's interest in the 2010 ESABA English Schoolboys Championship was considerably reduced with four defeats out of five in last weekend's pre-quarter-finals between the Western Counties and Southern Counties in Southampton.
Fourteen-year old Westlands (Torquay) pupil Nathan Halton (Apollo ABC) is the only survivor having been awarded a walk-over after Stanley Price (Sandwich ABC) pulled out of their scheduled contest in the 68-70 kilo Class.
Halton, an overall winner in 2008 when the championships were known as The Golden Gloves, is now through to today's official quarter-finals at Sittingbourne in Kent where he faces Gerald Nivin (Lewsey ABC).
Alas, it was curtains for Replica Parmigiani Watches another year for Halton's Apollo club- mate Nathan Mackin (48-50k Class); Torbay ABC's Zane Turner (57- 60k) and Joshua Hartley (36-38k); and Paignton Pro-Am Club's Tyler Barwood (42-44k).
louis vuitton watchesMackin, 14, from Torquay Community College, was stopped in the third round by Michael Dunphy (Guildford ABC) after being worn down by his Surrey opponent's speed of hand.
Hartley also failed to negotiate the whole of the final round after taking a fierce right hand shot from Jon-Boy Coates (Sittingbourne). In his case, 14-year old Hartley was retired by Torbay coach Dave Stacey with tiredness having set in.
Turner, 14, did himself and the Torbay club proud by taking current British Schoolboys' champion Tom Matthews (Faversham ABC) all the way before losing 7pts-4 under the electronic scoring system.
"He had a particularly good last round to narrow the scores," praised Stacey.
Fourteen-year old Barwood's points defeat against Guildford's Thomas Mobey was a mystery insofar as the scoring system had Mobey 3- 1 ahead at the final bell.
"You can't tell me there were only four points scored in the whole of the contest," claimed the Brixham-based Barwood's father and coach, Duane Barwood.
Replica Audemars Piguet Watches"The Southern Counties boxers seemed to know how to work the system whereas this was our first experience of knowing the certain positions you need to be in the ring for the judges to score when throwing a punch.
"Tyler boxed well, and I felt had done enough, but it wasn't to be.
"In the end, I realise I was a bit green while they (Southern Counties) had it weighed off to a tee as to what side of the ring to be on, where two of the three judges are positioned.
"However, you live and learn.
I've only been involved on the training side for two years, but I'll be taking lessons from those more familiar with the electronic scoring system before the next championships."
