上野のパンダ、２０２６年２月で中国に帰っちゃいますよね。
本当かなぁ。
わたし、関西出身なので、神戸の王子動物園で、もう何回もパンダを見たことがあったので、
パンダって、ほぼ日常の一部だった。
日本で、パンダが見れなくなるって、びっくり。
アドベンチャーワールドのパンダももう中国に帰ってしまったもんね。
子どもが小さい時、よく王子動物園に連れていってたのですが(当時は関西に住んでた)、
下の小学生の男の子はどうやらパンダをしっかり見た記憶がないようで、この前の３連休の最終日、
「最後にパンダを見に行こう！」
って二人で行ってきました。
そこで、パンダを見るためのコツがあったので、こちらに残しておこうと☆
１．開園前から並ぶ。弁天門口がパンダ舎から近い。
私たちがいった、11月３連休最終日は、開園時間は１０分早めて、９時２０分でした。
９時１０分過ぎについて、もう確かに人混みではないものの、１００人くらいは前に並んでいました。
その時聞こえてきたのが、
「そうだったー、弁天門口の方がパンダ舎に近いんだった。そっちに並べばよかったー。」という声。
確かにー。表門口が一番べたで、駅から近いから混むし、地図をみると、弁天門口入るとパンダ舎すぐでした
２．朝いちはパンダの食事シーンが見れる
入場後、すぐにパンダを見に向かいました。パンダはオスのシャオシャオとメスのレイレイの２匹いて、別々の建物。
２匹見るには、二回列を並ばないといけません。
入って、すぐのシャオシャオは、ながーい列を歩いたものの、順調に見れて、入場から３０分もかからず見れました。
しかも、かわいいかわい、食事シーン
竹をむしゃむしゃ。めっちゃ可愛かった
その上、時間制限なしで、こころゆくまでパンダを見ることができました。
３．早めがいいと確信したのは
その次に向かったのがレイレイ。
もうシャオシャオを満喫したので良いかなーとも思ったものの、今回の上野動物園にきた目的は
パンダ！
だったので、列に並ぶことに。
看板には
「１１０分待ち」
とあり、さっきシャオシャオで、「６０分待ち」と見たものの、３０分で見れたから、まぁ、行けるかぁと思い
行ってみたら。。。
はい、「１１０分」しっかり待ちました。
順番がきたら、説明を受ける。
シャオシャオとシステムが違うのか、イマイチ不明ながら、こちらは、
タイマーで１分×２回、の２分間だけ観れるらしい。
そして、入ると、レイレイ、寝てるー
朝いちばんに食事タイムだから、ちょうど眠い時間だったんでしょう
動物だからね、人間の思うようには、動いてくれないよね。。。
息子と二人、げっそりと疲れ果てて、レイレイのパンダ舎を出ましたとさ。
というわけで、パンダを見るなら、ちょっと早めに、年明けると超混むだろうから、時期も早めに行くことをおすすめします
日中関係改善して、パンダも新しいのが来るっていう顛末になったら良いのですがね
The Ueno pandas are supposed to return to China in February 2026.
Is that really happening?
Since I’m from Kansai region, I’ve seen pandas many times at Kobe’s Oji Zoo.
For me, pandas were almost part of everyday life.
So the idea that we might not be able to see pandas in Japan anymore is pretty shocking.
The pandas at Adventure World have already gone back to China, too.
When my kids were small, I used to take them to Oji Zoo often (back when we lived in Kansai).
But apparently, my younger son—now an elementary school boy—doesn’t really remember seeing pandas. So on the last day of the recent three-day weekend, he said:
“Let’s go see the pandas one last time!”
So the two of us went.
And we learned a few helpful tips for seeing pandas, so I’m writing them down here☆
1. Line up before the zoo opens. The Benten Gate is closest to the panda house.
On the last day of the November long weekend, the zoo opened 10 minutes early at 9:20 a.m.
We arrived a little after 9:10, and although it wasn’t super crowded, there were already about 100 people in front of us.
I overheard someone saying:
“Oh right—Benten Gate is closer to the panda house. We should’ve lined up there!”
True enough. The main gate is the most typical choice and closest to the station, so it gets crowded. But if you look at the map, the panda house is right near Benten Gate.
2. Go in the morning to catch the pandas’ breakfast time
After entering, we headed straight to the pandas.
There are two pandas—Xiao Xiao (male) and Lei Lei (female)—in separate buildings, so you need to line up twice if you want to see both.
We started with Xiao Xiao. The line was long, but it moved smoothly, and we were able to see him in less than 30 minutes after entering the zoo.
And we were lucky—it was feeding time!
He was happily munching on bamboo. So cute!
There was no time limit either, so we could watch him as long as we wanted.
3. Why going early really is the best strategy
Next, we headed to see Lei Lei.
Honestly, after enjoying Xiao Xiao so much, I felt like we were already satisfied.
But the whole point of coming to Ueno Zoo this time was…
Pandas!
So we decided to line up.
The sign said “110 minutes wait.”
But since the sign for Xiao Xiao had said “60 minutes” and we got through in half the time, we thought, “It’ll probably be fine.”
It wasn’t.
We waited the full 110 minutes.
Before entering, they explained the viewing system.
Apparently it’s different from Xiao Xiao’s. We weren’t entirely sure how, but for Lei Lei, you only get two one-minute viewing sessions, for a total of two minutes.
And when we finally got inside…
Lei Lei was asleep.
It was right after breakfast time, so of course she was sleepy.
Animals don’t perform on our schedule, after all…
My son and I came out of the panda house feeling completely exhausted.
So, if you want to see the pandas, I highly recommend going early in the day, and also early in the season—it’ll probably get insanely crowded after the New Year.
I really hope Japan–China relations improve and we eventually get new pandas again someday.
