Revelers watched in horror as a Wisconsin man was arrested and charged with driving an SUV into a crowd at the Waukesha Christmas Parade on Main Street.

The man, identified as Darrell E. Brooks, 39, was arrested on suspicion of five counts of voluntary manslaughter, Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson told reporters.

City officials identified the four women and men who were killed as Virginia Sorenson, 79, Leona Irwin, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Coolidge, 52, and William Hospel, 81.

Another 48 people were injured, including two children in critical condition, police said.

Thompson said Brooks "deliberately drove his maroon SUV through a barricade and into a crowd" at 4:39 p.m. Sunday.

Law enforcement sources said Brooks had been involved in a domestic incident involving a knife before the crash, but it was not immediately clear who the victim was.

Police said Brooks fled the scene of a domestic disturbance when officers arrived and was then redirected to the parade.

"Was there an initial complaint that a knife was involved? Yes, "Thompson said. "Do we know if there really is one there? We don't know because we didn't even get there. We ended up responding immediately to the crisis."

An officer fired at the SUV but quickly stopped shooting, deciding there were too many people nearby, Thompson said. No one was shot.
