Galveston, Texas -- A woman fell to her death from the mast of a historic boat on display at a Texas museum after her seat belt was somehow loosened, police said.

The 58-year-old woman died Saturday after falling from the mast of the tall ship Elissa moored at the Galveston Harbor Museum, the Galveston County Daily News reported.

"We're not sure exactly what happened when she wasn't clamped," Port of Galveston Police Chief Kenneth Brown said. "As she was moving from place to place, she apparently slipped and fell."

A spokesman for the Galveston Historical Foundation, which operates the ship and museum, confirmed his death but declined to provide further details.

According to the newspaper, training sessions are held on Elissa every year, including a rigging course, which involves climbing a boat's mast. The training class was scheduled to meet Saturday, according to the foundation's website.

The historical foundation brought Elissa, which was built in 1877, from a scrap yard in Greece in 1978, according to the foundation. After restoration work, the ship opened as a floating museum and now has more than 40,000 visitors a year.
