A teenager who had just started working at a Burger King in Manhattan - and already wanted to leave the night shift because he was scared - was shot in the stomach early Sunday, killing more than $100, police and relatives said.
Police said the armed robbers entered the restaurant at 116th Street and Lexington Avenue in East Harlem about 1 a.m., whipped a male customer with a handgun and then punched a female manager in the face. A witness said Kristal Bayron-Nieves, 19, a cashier, gave the robber cash from a drawer, according to her mother. Witnesses said the offender then turned to walk away, but then turned and shot Bayron-Nieves in the torso.
The victim's family said the killer got away with just $100.
The teen was taken to Metropolitan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
"She shouldn't have been cut when she was working at Burger King," a police source said.
