A disgraced nun who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Los Angeles Catholic elementary school and went on a gambling spree in Las Vegas will recite her confession from her federal prison cell.
Sister Mary Margaret Krupper of Los Angeles was sentenced Monday to one year and one day for fraud and money laundering charges. The 80-year-old nun was also ordered to pay restitution of $825,338.57 for funds she misappropriated while serving as principal of St. James Catholic School in Torrance, California.
Prosecutors say Krupper, who served as a school principal for 28 years, diverted funds to pay expenses that her orders - the Sisters of St. Joseph in Calondret - would never approve, including hefty gambling expenses for casino trips and credit card fees she paid from 2008 to September 2018.
