チャップリンデー（4月16日 記念日）
こんにちは。神木保祐（かみきほゆう）です。
今日はチャップリンデーです。
静岡の茶ップリンも好きです。
1889年（明治22年）のこの日、20世紀最大の映画監督であり、喜劇俳優であるチャールズ・チャップリンがイギリス・ロンドンで生まれた。
チャップリンはなんとなく知っていたけれど、それまで特に好きだったわけではない。
なにも知らない真っ新な状態で、「チャップリンの独裁者」という映画を初めてみた時、衝撃的だった。
この映画を第二次世界大戦中の１９４０年に作っていたという事。
一年前の１９３９年にドイツ軍がポーランドを侵略したことから、第二次大戦がはじまった。
おそらく約一年くらいの映画作成時間でしょう？
その頃、ヒットラーのイメージも今みたいに共通認識で固定されている時代じゃないと思うのよね。
その時代の人からすると歴史じゃなくて、今なわけだから。
この時代にこういう人間が、映画を作れて情報を発信できる立場にいたことが、奇跡的だと思った。
勇気がいただろうに、発言した事もすごいと思いました。
チャップリンが地球に存在してくれた事に感謝。
そして、私はこの映画の最後のシーンが好きなのです。
本当は、ぜひ最後のこのシーンの為に、全部映画を見てほしい。

すまないが、わたしは皇帝にはなりたくない。それはわたしのしごとではない。わたしは支配したくない、誰かを征服したくないのだ。できるならわたしは皆を助けたい、ユダヤ人も黒人も白人も。
わたしたちは、お互いに助け合いたい。人間とはそういうものだ。わたしたちは、お互いしあわせに生きていたいのだ、惨めにではなく。お互いに憎んだり、軽蔑したりしたくない。この世界には、皆の場所がある。この青い星には皆を養えるだけの富がある。
生命の道とは、自由で美しいものだ。しかし、わたしたちは、道を失ってしまった。貪欲は、人の魂に毒を塗り、憎悪に満ちた世界がバリケードをもたらし、悲劇と流血をもたらした。
スピードを手にしたが、わたしたちはひきこもりになり、機械は豊富さを与えて、わたしたちを欲望の中に置き去りにしている。知識は、わたしたちをシニカルにし、冷酷で不親切にしている。
わたしたちはたくさん考える、そして、感じることは少なくなっている。機械よりも、わたしたちはヒューマニティを必要としている。頭でっかちよりも、親切さと礼儀を必要としている。これらのクオリティなしでは、生命は荒れ、全てを失ってしまうだろう。
航空機とラジオはわたしたちをより近づけた。これらの発明は、人の良きものを強く求める。わたしたちをひとつにするために、全世界の兄弟関係を求める。現在も、私の声は世界の数百万に届いている、数百万の失意の男に、女に、子供たちに。無実の人々を拷問し、投獄するシステムの犠牲者たち、わたしの声が聞こえる人たちよ、わたしは言う。「希望を失うな」
現在は惨めだが、貪欲は過ぎ去る、人類の進歩の道を恐れている者の苦み、憎悪は過ぎ去り、独裁者は滅び、彼らが奪った力が、人々に戻ってくる。自由は決して滅びることはないだろう。
兵士たちよ、獣に自分を渡すな、独裁者はあなたを軽蔑し、奴隷にし、あなたの命を統制する。 何を考え、何を感じ、何をするのかを彼らはあなたに言う。あなたを訓練し、痩せ細らせ、キャノン飼料として、牛のように扱う。
不自然な人間、機械の頭と心をした機械人間にあなたを渡すな。あなたは機械ではない、あなたは牛ではない。あなたは、ひとだ。胸に愛を抱いている。憎んではいけない、愛さないことだけを憎むのだ。愛さないことだけ、そして不自然だけを。 兵士たちよ、奴隷制度のために戦うな、自由のために戦うのだ。
聖人ルークの十七章に書かれている、「神の王国は人間の中にある」と。ひとりの人ではない、グループの人でもない、すべての人間の中にだ、あなたの中にだ。誰もがだ。
あなたたち誰もが力を持っている、機械を創る力を、しあわせを創る力を持っている。自由で美しい人生にする力、この生をすばらしい冒険にする力を。
民主主義の名のもとに、この力を使おう。その力でわたしたちを一体にし、新しい世界の為に戦おう。良き世界では、人に仕事の機会を与えよう。未来を与え、生のまっとうと安心を与えよう。
これらの約束によって、独裁者は力を得た。しかし、彼らはうそをついた。約束を満たさず、彼らは決して行わない。彼らは彼ら自身を解放し、人々を奴隷にした。
今、約束を果たすために、わたしたちは戦おう。自由な世界に向けて戦おう、 国と国の壁を離れることに戦おう、貧欲と憎悪と不寛容を離れよう。科学と進歩が、全ての人をしあわせに導くようにと、戦おう。兵士たちよ、民主主義の名のもとに、わたしたちをひとつにしよう。
ハンナ 聞こえるか？どこにいても、見上げるんだ。
雲が上がっていき、太陽が姿を現している。わたしたちは、闇から出て、光の中に入っている。わたしたちは新しい世界の中に入っている。良き、新しい世界は、彼らの憎悪と貪欲と野蛮の上にそびえ立っている。

The Last Speech from the movie “The Great Dictator”

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible —Jew, Gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another.
In this world there’s room for everyone and the good earth is rich, and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost.
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children —
victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me I say: “Do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress, the hate of men who will pass, and dictators die. And the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.”
Soldiers, don’t give yourselves to brutes — men who despise you, enslave you,
who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men! Machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men!
You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate.
Only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers, don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!
In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke it is written: “The Kingdom of God is within man.” Not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power! The power to create machines. The power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite! Let us fight for a new world. A decent world, that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie. They do not fulfill that promise. They never will. Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people.
Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world.
To do away with national barriers. To do away with greed with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason. A world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.
Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!
