The Cassowary 's forward kicks are so powerful that a single strike can tear flesh apart. The large three claws on the thick toes measure up to 12cm in length, exhibiting a knife-like sharpness. The kicking force, attributed to the powerful leg muscles and sharp claws, is said to exceed 120kg, potentially causing fatal wounds by tearing flesh apart with a single blow.
Its leg strength is astonishing, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.
There have been reported cases of fatalities involving Cassowary attacks, such as a 75-year-old male owner who accidentally fell within the Hihi's territory on a farm and succumbed to a fatal kick. Additionally, there is a recorded incident where a 16-year-old assailant was killed by a Cassowary after initiating an attack.
Although the Cassowary typically exhibits a calm and timid demeanor, it becomes aggressive and retaliates when it senses danger. The male owner's death may have occurred due to a misunderstanding, as his fall might have been perceived as an attack.
The Cassowary possesses a strong territorial awareness and does not favor humans entering its territory. For a timid Cassowary, merely approaching humans can trigger a defensive response with the potential for retaliation.
It is unknown what specific human movements may be interpreted as an "attack" by the Cassowary. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid approaching too closely. If one inadvertently gets too close, the best course of action is to avoid sudden movements and slowly retreat. Even acts of goodwill, such as offering food, may be perceived as a threat by the Hihi.
