The okapi inhabits the Congo in Central Africa and has striped patterns on its buttocks and legs, resembling those of a zebra. Despite the appearance of being related to zebras or horses, the okapi actually belongs to the giraffe family. Similarities with giraffes include an extremely long tongue used to grasp and consume leaves, which constitute a favorite food. Additionally, the okapi, like the giraffe, is a ruminant with a four-chambered stomach.
The head features two skin-covered horns, akin to those of a giraffe. However, unlike giraffes, okapi horns are present in males but absent in females. This distinguishes them from their giraffe relatives.
Okapis possess split hooves, and proper hoof care is crucial. Natural wear from reduced physical activity is insufficient, prompting zoos to use files to trim and maintain their hooves. In essence, nail care is of paramount importance for okapi hoof health.
