Forget about studying nursing in Aus

Most graduates in nursing have been under duress seeking employment post graduation. This INCLUDES LOCALS which by virtue of the Australian government's need to protect jobs for citizens have not been very successful in doing so. This is because the hospitals are not given sufficient budgets to expand their workforce.

Recently Victoria and NSW adopted a strong stance that a general ward should be staffed at a ratio of 1 nurse to 4 patients max. The reason for this is that quality of care is compromised when the nurses are spread too thin. Well guess what, NSW public hospitals closed over 300 plus beds because it was NOT prepared to employ more nurses to meet the Union's demand for the staffing ratio of 1: 4

New graduate nurses, especially those in Division 1 are finding it very hard to seek employment, whilst some were prepared to take up positions as part timers and straight into the role of an RN without going through the transition program (Graduate Nurse Program), the red tape in public hospitals are preventing most hospitals from employing these graduates as full fledge RNs. So there you go, a whole heap of unemployed nurses - many of which are Australia citizens themselves.

The Australian Government is giving priority to citizens and PRs over international students first. The problem I am hearing now is that the number of Graduate Nurse Programs are dwindling...i.e. fewer positions available in 2011 than 2010. I don't know what 2012 is like but believe me its is pretty dry out there.
