The official X account of “NoBorder,” a politics-focused YouTube channel run by entrepreneur Yuji Mizoguchi, announced on March 4 that it would change the name of the cryptocurrency “SANAE TOKEN,” which bears the name of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and was launched by the channel.

Going forward, the channel will also provide compensation to holders and set up a review committee to examine the facts.

According to the post, the NoBorder team had been promoting the initiative in cooperation with “Team Sanae Will Change Japan,” an “officially recognized” supporters’ association of Prime Minister Takaichi, as well as a company called neu.

However, it said that “in response to communications from Prime Minister Takaichi’s side, there were aspects in how we communicated and shared understanding that cannot be said to have been sufficient,” and that this led to the present measures.

It also stated that, “in order to identify token holders eligible for compensation and prevent confusion caused by inappropriate speculation,” it took a snapshot (a record of the state at that time) of all holding wallets as of noon on the 3rd. However, it did not mention specific details of the compensation.

On the 4th, Mizoguchi posted on his own X account that he had “no intention of denying statements from Prime Minister Takaichi’s side.” He said he would work on the series of responses, and that the specific approach would be announced later.

SANAE TOKEN is a crypto asset issued as a new NoBorder project. Although its official website includes a disclaimer stating that it is “not partnered with or endorsed by Ms. Takaichi,” it features an illustration of Prime Minister Takaichi and provides explanations that could be interpreted as implying her involvement. This sparked controversy on social media, with comments such as “could this be a scam?” and “it’s misleading.”

Confusion also spread on social media after an X account calling itself Prime Minister Takaichi’s “official” supporters’ association reposted NoBorder’s post. On the 2nd, however, Prime Minister Takaichi clearly denied any relationship on her official X account. On the 3rd, Kyodo News and others reported that the Financial Services Agency was considering investigating “SANAE TOKEN,” a cryptocurrency bearing Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s name.

Also on the 3rd, the X account claiming to be the supporters’ association removed the repost “to avoid misunderstanding,” and explained that its posts had not been “confirmed, approved, etc., on an ongoing basis by Diet member Sanae Takaichi.”
