PRESS CONFERENCE
Takashi Uesugi
Founder of NO BORDER & Producer of News OPED

14:30-15:30 Friday, December 1, 2017
(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

If you wonder why Japan ranked 72nd on this year's Reporters Without Borders press freedom list behind countries like Mongolia, Lesotho, Serbia and Malawi, the Club has decided to invite Takashi Uesugi to share his recent experience.

Uesugi, who co-founded the Free Press Association in Japan (FPAJ), was kicked off the golf course where U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were playing golf. This is just the last episode of his controversial career as a journalist on the razors' edge.

Born in 1968, a symbolic year for dissent in modern Japanese history, Uesugi has been a constant thorn in Japan's "closed shop" media world, regularly challenging the Kisha Club system and breaking rules when he feels there is a need.

Although Uesugi has been both criticized and lauded by his fellow journalists, one thing cannot be denied: He's not afraid to challenge authority to gain access to a story, even a big story like the Trump-Abe golf fest.

In his career, Uesugi has worked as an aide to politicians like Kunio Hatoyama and Morihiro Hosokawa. In 2016, he ran for Tokyo Governor and got nearly 3% of the vote, finishing fourth.

In 2011, he was one of the early critics of Tokyo Electric Power Company for its handling of the Fukushima nuclear accidents. He subsequently started his own blog and then co-founded the Free Press Association in Japan.

Several years earlier, he published a book titled "The Collapse of Journalism", a grim analysis of where our industry stood then, nearly a decade before the attacks on the press by the Abe administration in Japan and the Trump administration in the U.S.
