Trees, traffic lights and power lines will have to come down — how else could you possibly move 180,000 pounds of metal along an L.A. street, especially when it measures 122 feet long and has a wingspan of 78 feet?
That will be the next mission of the California Science Center, the state museum that on Tuesday was officially granted ownership of the retired space shuttle Endeavour.
The ship won't arrive until the latter half of 2012, fortunately, because finding a clear path for it will be a gargantuan task. Already, workers have taken images of a tentative route and fed them into a computer model, simulating how the shuttle would move across the city.
"It's going to come on top of a big airplane, a 747, and it's going to circle the L.A. area three times, and then we're going to have a parade — the mother of all parades," L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said to cheers at the science center Tuesday. "And from LAX, through the great city of Inglewood, down Martin Luther King Boulevard, it is going to be a sight to be seen."
Los Angeles won the right to the shuttle after besting museums across the county in a competition sponsored by NASA. Museums in Florida and suburban Washington got the two other shuttles, while a New York City museum secured the shuttle prototype. The science center plans to make Endeavour a centerpiece of its upcoming $170-million third wing, a new Air and Space Center.
Though officials won't need to tear down buildings or bridges to make way for Endeavour, smaller hindrances like traffic signals, power lines and trees could come down, said museum President Jeffrey N. Rudolph. The cities will be reimbursed by the museum for the cost of moving lights, and trees will be replaced after the move, the mayors of L.A. and Inglewood said.
After arriving at LAX and spending a week in a hangar, the shuttle will be prepared for a 14- or 15-hour journey to its new home at the Exposition Park museum next to USC. In space, the shuttle traveled at 17,500 mph, but on the ground its top speed will average about 1 mph. "We might really speed up a couple of times to 2 or 3 miles an hour," Rudolph said.
According to officials, the preliminary route envisions the shuttle crossing over the 405 Freeway, traveling through Inglewood on Manchester Boulevard, and then approaching the museum via Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards.
"We can do it," Rudolph said. "You go over a freeway. It's just the capacity of the bridge to handle the weight, and we've got that. You can't go under, unless you're taking a bridge down. But we're not going to do another 'Carmageddon.'
"There's no single thing that's a big obstacle. It's hundreds of power cables, hundreds of telephone cables, hundreds of lights and poles, and we can't miss one of those. Because if we get eight miles from the airport and someone says, 'Oops, we forgot about that,' that's not going to look very good," Rudolph said.
One street that will probably lose trees is Crenshaw Boulevard, but those trees would have to come down anyway for the construction of a light rail line, Rudolph said.
Despite the headaches of bringing the shuttle to the city, Villaraigosa and Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts gave their full-throated welcome to Endeavour.

There is no direct evidence of the mythical creatures as they are soft-bodied and it is hard to present a firm case of existence of for them. But the discovery of large piles of ichthyosaur bones lend weight to the idea that something very large was hunting them, dragging them back to its underwater lair.
The fossilized remains of a nine 45-foot ichthyosaurs that comes under the species called Shonisaurus popularis have puzzled researchers for decades. The fossils were discovered in Nevada's Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park.

The peculiar arrangement of the fossils makes the finding even more mysterious for researchers, including Dr. Charles Lewis Camp, one of the country's most renowned paleontologists and the world's foremost expert on the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park site.
"Charles Camp puzzled over these fossils in the 1950s. In his papers he keeps referring to how peculiar this site is. We agree, it is peculiar,” McMenamin said in the Geological Society of America’s press release.
Dr. Camp had theorized that the arrangement of the bones suggested a group death by stranding in shallow water or as the result of exposure to a toxic plankton bloom. However, the most recent survey of the region suggests it was actually a deep water environment. Also, the etching on the bones of the animals suggested they were not all killed and buried at the same time.
However, Dr. McMenamin has a different theory; after examining the placement and sucker markings on bones, he believes that creatures were drowned or had their necks snapped by a Kraken-like creature. They also seemed to be purposefully rearranged.
This is where the thought of a particular modern predator, known for this type of intelligent manipulation of bones and leaving them in their dens, came to McMenamin's mind.
The arrangement of the bones is strongly indicative of octopus-like behavior, which encourages the view that this beast had tentacles.
"Modern octopus will do this," McMenamin said. "I think that these things were captured by the kraken and taken to the midden and the cephalopod would take them apart."
McMenamin explained that in the fossil bed, some of the shonisaurs' bones were arranged in curious linear patterns with almost geometric regularity.
"We think that this cephalopod in the Triassic was doing the same thing," McMenamin said. "It was either drowning them or breaking their necks."
What made it even creepier was that the arranged vertebrae resembled the pattern of sucker discs on a cephalopod tentacle. In other words, the vertebral disc "pavement" seen at the park may be the earliest known self-portrait.
However, McMenamin's theory has been approached with skepticism by many scientists.
“There is little evidence to support it and Dr. McMenamin is exceptionally imaginative," Dr. PZ Myers, a biologist and associate professor at the University of Minnesota, Morris, said in a blog post.
"This fossil bed is being over-interpreted as a trace fossil, with the bones arranged by intent, by an intelligent cephalopod, which they have not seen. Furthermore, a line of discs is being seen as a picture of a cephalopod tentacle, classic pareidolia... This is a whole series of tenuous and unlikely speculations stacked together to make an ultimately ridiculous hypothesis,” he wrote.
"It's the perfect Triassic crime because octopuses are mostly soft-bodied and don't fossilize well," Christa Stratton said, spokesman for the GSA, since their beaks are the only hard part of their body.
That means there is no hard evidence for the theory. It is only circumstantial evidence that the Kraken is the culprit, which may leave some scientists rather skeptical.
But McMenamin is ready to defend his theory against skeptics.
"We're ready for this," he said. "We have a very good case."

UNICEF says it is fighting "one of the worst ever" outbreaks of cholera in West and Central Africa that has made over 85,000 people sick and killed 2,466 people so far this year. The magnitude of the outbreaks mean this part of the world is facing one of the most devastating epidemics in its history, the United Nations agency added.
CFRs (case fatality rates) are alarmingly high, UNICEF warned, ranging from 2.3% to 4.7% in many areas, and possibly up to 22% in some parts of Cameroon.
Young children are especially susceptible to cholera complications because they dehydrate more rapidly than adults - those at most risk are malnourished children.
This year, Cameroon, western Democratic Republic of Congo (DCR), and Chad have had the highest increases in cholera incidence.
UNICEF wrote in a communiqué today:
"In addition there are still challenges with getting access, ensuring staff presence in medical facilities and establishing surveillance systems to monitor cases and numbers in parts of North-East DRC."

In West and Central Africa, UNICEF reports three major cross-border cholera epidemics:
The Lake Chad Basin - which borders Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad
West Congo Basin - which borders the Central African Republic, DRC and Condo
Lake Tanganyika - where Burindi and DRC meet.
UNICEF is supplying desperately needed treatment kits, carrying out community education campaigns on hygiene, as well as assisting with epidemiological surveys to try to make sure control efforts are optimally targeted.
Authorities can play a major role in saving lives in this emergency, UNICEF stressed.
Many lives can be saved and the disease controlled if there is effective information exchange between cross-border districts on the number of cases and population movements. Inspections across borders for chlorination and disinfection can also save lives and keep the disease under control.
It is important that the governments in the affected areas coordinate the response and preparation both within their own borders and in collaboration with their neighbors. Multi-level cross-border coordination is crucial, UNICEF emphasized - from national to district levels.
In 2010, UNICEF initiated a cross-border epidemiological study which covered the Lake Basin, where Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon borders are located. This study is now in its second phase.
UNICEF wrote, regarding this study:
"The study provides critical evidence for informing cholera prevention and response interventions, which have to be coordinated across borders. Cross-border coordination between teams in Kinshasa and Brazzaville has also been initiated for the more recent cholera outbreak in the West Congo Basin."
About Cholera
Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera
According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary:
Cholera "is an acute epidemic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. A soluble toxin elaborated in the intestinal tract by the bacterium activates the adenylate cylase of the mucosa, causing active secretion of an isotonic fluid resulting in profuse watery diarrhea, extreme loss of fluid and electrolytes, and dehydration and collapse, but no gross morphologic change in the intestinal mucosa."
The majority of cholera infections are not, in fact, severe. Approximately 75% of infected individuals show no symptoms.
If signs and symptoms do appear, they will do so within 6 hours to five days of exposure. In severe cases the patient can have explosive watery diarrhea, sometimes referred to as rice water stools because it looks like water that has been used to wash rice. There is also vomiting and leg cramps. Fluid loss can be severe and rapid, with some patients losing up to 20 liters per day - in such cases there is a serious risk of severe dehydration and shock.
Signs of dehydration may include an accelerated heart beat, low blood pressure, rapid weight loss, sunken eyes, and a loss of skin plasticity. Shock occurs when the circulatory system collapses.
The bacterium which causes cholera, Vibrio cholera, is not endemic to humans. Its presence in the human digestive system is not a natural part of its life cycle. Vibrio cholera is typically found, for example, in estuaries, and during its life cycle it shifts between various reservoir species, such as crustaceans, small snails, free-floating planktonic forms, and static forms resident in the silt of the estuary.
The bacterium most commonly enters the human ecosystem through contaminated food or water, such as insufficiently cooked seafood from estuaries, or poorly cleaned vegetables irrigated by tainted water sources.
A single infected human can contaminate all the water for an entire population if sanitation is poor.
Cholera is a disease that affects poor areas where basic sanitation and hygiene are inadequate.

New figures show the global death toll has also fallen, to its lowest level in a decade, with major headway made in China, Brazil, Kenya and Tanzania.
But the WHO warns that a lack of funds threatens progress, especially in relation to multi-drug resistant TB.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there was no cause for complacency.
According to the WHO, the figures represent a significant milestone in the battle against a disease that infects one third of the world's population, although only a small proportion become sick as a result.

Spectacular progress was made in China, said the WHO, where the death rate fell by almost 80% between 1990 and 2010. In Kenya and Tanzania there has also been a substantial decline in the last decade after a peak linked to the HIV epidemic.
"This is major progress. But it is no cause for complacency," the UN Secretary-General said in a statement.
"Too many millions still develop TB each year, and too many die. I urge serious and sustained support for TB prevention and care, especially for the world's poorest and most vulnerable people."

UNICEF says it is fighting "one of the worst ever" outbreaks of cholera in West and Central Africa that has made over 85,000 people sick and killed 2,466 people so far this year. The magnitude of the outbreaks mean this part of the world is facing one of the most devastating epidemics in its history, the United Nations agency added.
CFRs (case fatality rates) are alarmingly high, UNICEF warned, ranging from 2.3% to 4.7% in many areas, and possibly up to 22% in some parts of Cameroon.
Young children are especially susceptible to cholera complications because they dehydrate more rapidly than adults - those at most risk are malnourished children.
This year, Cameroon, western Democratic Republic of Congo (DCR), and Chad have had the highest increases in cholera incidence.
UNICEF wrote in a communiqué today:
"In addition there are still challenges with getting access, ensuring staff presence in medical facilities and establishing surveillance systems to monitor cases and numbers in parts of North-East DRC."

In West and Central Africa, UNICEF reports three major cross-border cholera epidemics:
The Lake Chad Basin - which borders Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad
West Congo Basin - which borders the Central African Republic, DRC and Condo
Lake Tanganyika - where Burindi and DRC meet.
UNICEF is supplying desperately needed treatment kits, carrying out community education campaigns on hygiene, as well as assisting with epidemiological surveys to try to make sure control efforts are optimally targeted.
Authorities can play a major role in saving lives in this emergency, UNICEF stressed.
Many lives can be saved and the disease controlled if there is effective information exchange between cross-border districts on the number of cases and population movements. Inspections across borders for chlorination and disinfection can also save lives and keep the disease under control.
It is important that the governments in the affected areas coordinate the response and preparation both within their own borders and in collaboration with their neighbors. Multi-level cross-border coordination is crucial, UNICEF emphasized - from national to district levels.
In 2010, UNICEF initiated a cross-border epidemiological study which covered the Lake Basin, where Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon borders are located. This study is now in its second phase.
UNICEF wrote, regarding this study:
"The study provides critical evidence for informing cholera prevention and response interventions, which have to be coordinated across borders. Cross-border coordination between teams in Kinshasa and Brazzaville has also been initiated for the more recent cholera outbreak in the West Congo Basin."
About Cholera
Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera
According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary:
Cholera "is an acute epidemic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. A soluble toxin elaborated in the intestinal tract by the bacterium activates the adenylate cylase of the mucosa, causing active secretion of an isotonic fluid resulting in profuse watery diarrhea, extreme loss of fluid and electrolytes, and dehydration and collapse, but no gross morphologic change in the intestinal mucosa."
The majority of cholera infections are not, in fact, severe. Approximately 75% of infected individuals show no symptoms.
If signs and symptoms do appear, they will do so within 6 hours to five days of exposure. In severe cases the patient can have explosive watery diarrhea, sometimes referred to as rice water stools because it looks like water that has been used to wash rice. There is also vomiting and leg cramps. Fluid loss can be severe and rapid, with some patients losing up to 20 liters per day - in such cases there is a serious risk of severe dehydration and shock.
Signs of dehydration may include an accelerated heart beat, low blood pressure, rapid weight loss, sunken eyes, and a loss of skin plasticity. Shock occurs when the circulatory system collapses.
The bacterium which causes cholera, Vibrio cholera, is not endemic to humans. Its presence in the human digestive system is not a natural part of its life cycle. Vibrio cholera is typically found, for example, in estuaries, and during its life cycle it shifts between various reservoir species, such as crustaceans, small snails, free-floating planktonic forms, and static forms resident in the silt of the estuary.
The bacterium most commonly enters the human ecosystem through contaminated food or water, such as insufficiently cooked seafood from estuaries, or poorly cleaned vegetables irrigated by tainted water sources.
A single infected human can contaminate all the water for an entire population if sanitation is poor.
Cholera is a disease that affects poor areas where basic sanitation and hygiene are inadequate.

New figures show the global death toll has also fallen, to its lowest level in a decade, with major headway made in China, Brazil, Kenya and Tanzania.
But the WHO warns that a lack of funds threatens progress, especially in relation to multi-drug resistant TB.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there was no cause for complacency.
According to the WHO, the figures represent a significant milestone in the battle against a disease that infects one third of the world's population, although only a small proportion become sick as a result.

Spectacular progress was made in China, said the WHO, where the death rate fell by almost 80% between 1990 and 2010. In Kenya and Tanzania there has also been a substantial decline in the last decade after a peak linked to the HIV epidemic.
"This is major progress. But it is no cause for complacency," the UN Secretary-General said in a statement.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — To some people, Apple's new iPhone 4S isn't the complete overhaul they have been hoping for. Its model number, which doesn't include a "5," reeks of the status quo.
That's ridiculous.
Sure, the 4S doesn't render the iPhone 4 hopelessly obsolete, and on the surface they're nearly identical. But with a faster processor, new software, a voice-activated personal assistant and a souped-up camera, it's a major improvement over the current iPhone.
The 4S will be available Friday in black or white. It will cost $199 to $399, depending on storage space. It requires a two-year service contract with Verizon Wireless, Sprint or AT&T.
If you have an older model such as the 3GS or are thinking of making the move to the iPhone, it's an excellent excuse to buy one.
The coolest new feature on the 4S is Siri, a software-based personal assistant who responds to your voice in a somewhat robotic, yet soothing female tone.
Siri can do all sorts of things, from setting your alarm clock to finding a good local sushi joint to playing DJ with your music. She can't bring up specific websites, but she can search the Web for pretty much anything.
Once you let her know who you are and where you live, she can even do complex tasks such as reminding you to call your boyfriend when you leave your house.
She can understand conversational English, which is great because it let me speak as I normally would (though I did have to enunciate well). This means you can say things like, "what's happening today?" or "what's going on today?" and she'll let you know what's on your calendar.
She's also a dictation dynamo, transcribing emails and texts much better than a phone running Google Inc.'s Android software. It would be awesome if she could intelligently insert punctuation marks, but she does get them if you tell her "period" or "exclamation point."
For a particularly difficult test, I read a random paragraph from a copy of "The New Yorker" to the 4S and to an Android smartphone. Siri didn't get all the words correct, but she overwhelmingly beat the competition.
Of course, after spending all this time together, I wanted to know all about Siri. I asked her a bunch of personal questions, with mixed results. Her favorite color is something she doesn't know how to say in English — "sort of greenish, but with more dimensions." She changed the subject when I asked if she was seeing anyone.
Note for foul-language fans: Siri understands profanities, but she may chastise you. She did this to me, so I asked whether she had a problem with my language. She told me to get back to work. I apologized.
Beyond Siri, I was happy to see a better camera on the 4S, which has an 8-megapixel lens compared with 5 megapixels on the iPhone 4. My shots had sharper details as a result. The new camera can also take pictures faster, and a new lens gathers more light so pictures shot in dim lighting look better.

With the iOS 5 upgrade, swiping the top of the screen now brings up a handy notification page, which shows you things such as appointments, reminders, weather and stock quotes.
IOS 5 also gets points for allowing you to step away from your computer: You can set up your iPhone and receive software updates on the device itself, without plugging it in.
In addition, it includes Apple's new iCloud content-syncing software, which can store your content online and push it wirelessly to your devices. If you buy lots of digital content from Apple, you'll like how it can automatically add songs, apps and e-books from Apple's iBookstore to all your iCloud-connected devices. Unfortunately, it doesn't do this with TV shows or movies, so you'll have to go into iTunes on the device to download them or sync the content from a computer.
The iPhone 4S's performance is helped by a new dual-core A5 chip, which is the same processor in the latest iPad. With this chip, the phone can process graphics and complete other tasks much faster. Web pages, especially graphics-heavy ones, loaded faster than they do on the iPhone 4.

Whereas Abbas' gains were purely symbolic, Hamas will be able to lead the celebrations over 1,027 returning prisoners. Never before has Israel paid so high a price for a single soldier. The families of returning prisoners will be photographed in all forms of Arabic media, and Hamas will hold huge processions to mark its victory.
On the other hand, Hamas is likely to also cop criticism for what appears to be a major compromise on its behalf: 203 released prisoners will be expelled from the Gaza Strip and many senior prisoners will remain behind bars. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — To some people, Apple's new iPhone 4S isn't the complete overhaul they have been hoping for. Its model number, which doesn't include a "5," reeks of the status quo.
That's ridiculous.
Sure, the 4S doesn't render the iPhone 4 hopelessly obsolete, and on the surface they're nearly identical. But with a faster processor, new software, a voice-activated personal assistant and a souped-up camera, it's a major improvement over the current iPhone.
The 4S will be available Friday in black or white. It will cost $199 to $399, depending on storage space. It requires a two-year service contract with Verizon Wireless, Sprint or AT&T.
If you have an older model such as the 3GS or are thinking of making the move to the iPhone, it's an excellent excuse to buy one.
The coolest new feature on the 4S is Siri, a software-based personal assistant who responds to your voice in a somewhat robotic, yet soothing female tone.
Siri can do all sorts of things, from setting your alarm clock to finding a good local sushi joint to playing DJ with your music. She can't bring up specific websites, but she can search the Web for pretty much anything.
Once you let her know who you are and where you live, she can even do complex tasks such as reminding you to call your boyfriend when you leave your house.
She can understand conversational English, which is great because it let me speak as I normally would (though I did have to enunciate well). This means you can say things like, "what's happening today?" or "what's going on today?" and she'll let you know what's on your calendar.
She's also a dictation dynamo, transcribing emails and texts much better than a phone running Google Inc.'s Android software. It would be awesome if she could intelligently insert punctuation marks, but she does get them if you tell her "period" or "exclamation point."
For a particularly difficult test, I read a random paragraph from a copy of "The New Yorker" to the 4S and to an Android smartphone. Siri didn't get all the words correct, but she overwhelmingly beat the competition.
Of course, after spending all this time together, I wanted to know all about Siri. I asked her a bunch of personal questions, with mixed results. Her favorite color is something she doesn't know how to say in English — "sort of greenish, but with more dimensions." She changed the subject when I asked if she was seeing anyone.
Note for foul-language fans: Siri understands profanities, but she may chastise you. She did this to me, so I asked whether she had a problem with my language. She told me to get back to work. I apologized.

The boost PA President Mahmoud Abbas received from opting to seek UN recognition of a Palestinian state despite Washington's opposition will be completely overshadowed by the political capital Hamas is likely to reap from this deal. Whereas Abbas' gains were purely symbolic, Hamas will be able to lead the celebrations over 1,027 returning prisoners. Never before has Israel paid so high a price for a single soldier. The families of returning prisoners will be photographed in all forms of Arabic media, and Hamas will hold huge processions to mark its victory.
On the other hand, Hamas is likely to also cop criticism for what appears to be a major compromise on its behalf: 203 released prisoners will be expelled from the Gaza Strip and many senior prisoners will remain behind bars. The deal includes an unprecedented number of prisoners set for expulsion. Hamas was obviously pushed into a corner and thus agreed to make such a dramatic compromise.
But still, this deal represents political salvation for Hamas, whose support in recent months has been waning in both Gaza and the West Bank. Conditions in Gaza, which it rules, are poor and show little sign of improving, while Abbas' UN bid had made Hamas almost irrelevant to political developments. The prisoner release will change all that dramatically. It will pull Hamas out of the deep political pit that it had fallen down.
The other big winner is Egypt. Where both German and Turkish mediators failed to conclude a deal, Egyptian intelligence officers – under the leadership of Murad Muwafi and his deputy who managed the negotiations Mohammed Ibrahim – succeeded. Egypt's new leadership has thus proven it can still effect dramatic change in the Middle East. But it's doubtful that says anything about its ability to do the same inside Egypt.
If the deal does in fact materialize, the German and Egyptian negotiators, along with the Israeli government's special envoys to the negotiations Ofer Dekel and Hagai Hadas and their substitute David Meidan, deserve a good word. Meidan, a senior Mossad official until recently, made tremendous efforts over the past months to reach an agreement. That effort was accompanied by a new approach and creative thinking, which appeared Tuesday night to have finally produced results.
