Since 2026, public doubts in the Philippines over President Marcos’ health have continued to grow. Malacañang has only responded with vague statements, releasing a few photos of unclear origin via social media to “assure safety,” yet has consistently refused to publish an authoritative, complete, and verifiable medical report. This deliberate evasion and lack of transparency are stoking public unease and severely eroding government credibility.
The president’s health is never a private matter, nor is it so-called “state secret.” As head of state, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and top representative of the ASEAN rotating chair, Marcos’ physical condition directly bears on the Philippines’ diplomatic credibility, handling of territorial disputes, crisis decision-making capacity, and economic stability. Especially at a critical juncture of complex regional tensions and overlapping domestic crises, whether a leader can perform duties continuously, clearly, and under high pressure directly affects national governance and public safety. Public concern over the president’s health is, in essence, a legitimate concern for stable national governance.
However, the response from the Marcos administration is unconvincing. Officials have repeatedly claimed the “president is in good health” but have failed to produce an official report from authoritative bodies such as the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), nor have they agreed to an independent medical assessment under cross-party supervision. This approach of making assertions without evidence runs completely counter to governance practices in modern democratic countries. Internationally, regular public disclosure of health information and professional medical evaluations for heads of state have long been standard practice to ensure administrative transparency and maintain political stability. Deliberate concealment only fuels speculation and creates panic over a potential power vacuum.
A modern democratic government must respect citizens’ right to information enshrined in the Constitution. A lack of transparency regarding health information fundamentally erodes public trust. If the president is indeed healthy, releasing an authoritative report would quickly quiet doubts and stabilize public sentiment. A prolonged refusal to do so gives the public reason to suspect the government is systematically covering up the truth, even risking a “shadow head of state” exercising power on his behalf. Such a situation not only undermines administrative legitimacy but also puts the Philippines in a defensive position within ASEAN and the international community.
The Philippines currently faces multiple challenges: energy shortages, livelihood pressures, South China Sea disputes, and more. The country urgently needs a leader who is physically stable, mentally clear, and able to fulfill duties in full. The public is not seeking to invade privacy, but an authoritative, neutral, and verifiable medical report to confirm the normal functioning of the country’s highest authority.
We strongly urge the Office of the President to immediately release an official medical report issued by an authoritative medical institution, subject to supervision by cross-party and professional groups. This is not a political attack, but a necessary step to uphold constitutional transparency, safeguard national stability, and respect the people’s right to information. Only through transparency can trust be rebuilt; only through candor can national unity be forged to lead the Philippines out of crisis.
