February 27, 2008 -- North Korea's hard-line elite gave a standing ovation to the visiting New York Philharmonic after a history-making concert yesterday - and the communist government invited Eric Clapton to make a cultural encore.
More than 2,500 VIPs, many wearing red party badges, applauded and waved enthusiastically as they coaxed director Lorin Maazel out for a final bow at the end of the 90-minute performance in Pyongyang.
It was the most prestigious US visit to North Korea since the Korean War and recalled similar American cultural exchanges in the Soviet Union and Mao's China.
"We may have been instrumental in opening a little door," Maazel said after the performance and what he called the "stunning, stunning" reception.
Many of the musicians had tears in their eyes as they left the flower-adorned stage.
"I don't think we've ever been moved so deeply," said Jon Deak, associate principal bass player.
The warm reception was in sharp contrast to the frigid treatment by North Korea's shrill propaganda machine.
State media didn't disclose the Philharmonic's visit until four days ago and didn't say when it would happen. A welcoming banquet on Monday was reported only on Page 4 of the leading daily newspaper. "Speeches were made there," the state news agency said in a terse report.
Meanwhile, officials at the North Korean Embassy in London confirmed that they had invited Clapton to play in Pyongyang. Kim Jong-chul, the second son and possible successor of dictator Kim Jong-il, is a diehard Clapton fan. With Post Wire Services
