作物をうまく育てるっていうのはなかなか難しいものです。農業は文明や文化の元ですが、安全な食料の確保については歴史上でもっとも関心の高い時代をわたしたちは生きているのかもしれません。
農業はその生産技術の向上により安定した食の供給を可能にしてきました。
しかしそれは人間と自然の一部との戦いの歴史でもありました。
できた作物を時には根こそぎ台無しにしてしまう憎い敵がいました。カラスです。
あんなに嫌われるなんてなるべくカラスには生まれ変りたくないですが。
カラスは一般的に頭が良い鳥と言われています。
我が家でも明日食べごろだと思って楽しみにしていたスイカやメロンをまさにその日にカラスのやつに全部食べられたということが何度となくありました。
こんなくやしい思いはしなくない・・・・・・・。
ここに画期的な製品が栃木県のバネメーカーによって作られました。
「いやがらす」 カラスに嫌がらせというなかなかのネーミング。
この発明はこの企業 株式会社鎌田スプリングがバネ屋さんだからこそ生まれたものでした。
この企業は様々な種類のバネを量産している優良メーカーですが、この金属切削というプロセスではかならず削りクズがある程度出てしまいます。社長はこれが何かに使えないかとなんとなく思っていたそんなある日。ゴミ置き場に無造作に置かれていた例のステンレスの削りくずにギラギラとした太陽光線が丁度乱反射して近寄りがたい雰囲気。
当日の炎天下が幸いしたか社長がふと「こういうものはカラスも嫌がるのではないか！」とヒラメキました。
地元宇都宮大学農学部には運よくカラス博士こと杉田昭栄教授がいらっしゃり、さっそく研究を依頼し共同開発ということでカラス撃退グッズ「いやがらす」が誕生しました。
このニュースを私の番組で放送すると注文や問い合わせが殺到しました。
栃木県は日本有数の農業県でほとんどの野菜や穀物や果物が採れまして、この反応からも
農家や家庭菜園を楽しむ人々が待ち望んだ商品だったようです。その上酪農県である栃木県では牛舎用のバージョンも大人気です。
農林水産省の統計によればカラスの被害は年間３０億円、ヒヨドリは６億円にのぼるといわれます。カラスで困っているには日本だけではないはずで、もしかしたら世界にも広がるかもしれません。
それにしても元々はスクラップだったっていうのがなんともエコですね。

It is an excellent spring maker, producing a wide range of springs in large quantities. Yet they also produce stainless steel scraps in the process of making springs. One day, the president of the firm was thinking of how to make effective use of waste, when he hit upon a great idea as he watched the steel scraps in a garbage yard brightly reflected in the sunlight. ‘Oh, this should do it. Crows don’t like those reflecting spring scraps.’
