Happiness and Service
Running business is not easy. There are 2 million firms in deficit out of 2.8 million corporations in Japan. Even half of businesses in the country was in deficit in the bubble economy. That sounds grim. But there is a theory to make companies successful and happy.
To find out about it, I today took part in a lecture of Mr Koji Sakamoto, a professor of economics at Hosei University Post-Graduate Course and the author of ‘The Most Important Companies in Japan’. He has visited more than 6000 companies to study business management.
His idea is remarkable. After collecting materials for his study on management, he found that about 10% of the firms he had visited was running well without being affected by the recession. He suggested the theory that describes how the phenomenon happens. It is not the value of product or service that makes firms immune to the economic depression. It is rather employees with social values that keep businesses going. He says that there are 630 companies operating in that way.
I was surprised at his theory, which was different from what I studied at college. He says that management is to make stakeholders ranging from employees, their families, tie-up companies, customers, local communities to shareholders happy. And he adds that companies are stages for it. Indeed, what those successful firms have in common is to make their employees happy first.
If some products are the same in quality and price, what makes consumers decide from whom to buy is employees doing good service. That is, providing quality service makes customers feel and understand how happy members of staff are. Without employee satisfaction there is no customer satisfaction. This is the essence of business management.
I learnt a lot of management know-how from Mr Sakamoto. After the lecture I told him that I am a radio commentator with the same goal. He encouraged me greatly. I realised that to increase employees’ happiness -magic sauce- is Transpheric Management’s job.■
