アメリカって、いつもどこかと戦争してるんですね・・・

Intrepid Memorial Day ceremony honors fallen service members

イントレピッド追悼式典で戦没者を悼む

Hundreds turned out Monday for Memorial Day observances at the USS Intrepid.

アメリカ軍艦イントレピッドのメモリアルデーの式典に、月曜日、多くの人が参集した。

Mayor Bill de Blasio helped lay a wreath into the Hudson River during the annual ceremony.

ビル・デブラシオ市長は、ハドソン川に花輪を流した。

The mayor took a moment to say thank you to all the service members currently in Manhattan for Fleet Week.

市長は、フリートウィークのためにマンハッタンに居る兵士たちに感謝の意を表した。

"This city is so proud of all of you, and when Fleet Week comes every year, we open our arms and say welcome," de Blasio said. "It's a joy to be able to say thank you.

「ニューヨーク市は、あなた方を誇りに思い、フリートウィークのたびに歓迎しています。」「感謝を表することができてうれしく思います。」と述べた。

The service also featured the unrolling of a 100-foot American flag.

軍隊は、100フィートのアメリカ国旗を広げる様子を公開した。

More than 270 crew members of the Intrepid were killed during World War II, the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

270人以上のイントレピッドの乗組員が、第二次世界大戦やベトナム戦争、冷戦において没した。

Further uptown, a Memorial Day tribute was held at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument on the Upper West Side.

The commemoration took place at the monument on Riverside Drive and West 89th Street.

Wreaths were laid as active duty service members, veterans, civilians and families of those who have served looked on.

Spectators shared what Memorial Day means to them.

"To me, it's commemorating all the people that you occasionally see on television who've lost a son or a daughter or a parent. It's what we owe these people," said one spectator. "It's very hard. War is not a John Wayne movie."

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument was built in 1902 to remember Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War.
