You really needn't hire a professional homestager you can do it yourself! What I've learned, I've learned from a mortgage broker and a realtor. Walk through each room and make mental notes or paper notes on the clutter - there's always clutter. All the things on the kitchen counter that you use daily, put them in a cupboard or pack them. All the pictures on the wall or sitting around on tables - pack them! You may have devastating good taste but that doesn't necessarily make it appealing to someone with no taste.
My home was filled with collectibles, many walls had painted murals I had done myself. They received rave reviews from friends but I painted over them. When my realtor first walked into my townhouse she about dropped over she said pack it up, put it all away. I worked like a whirling dervish and sold my home in less than 24 hrs for a thousand dollars more than the asking price.
The basics of staging are getting rid of clutter; pack it and stack the packed boxes neatly against the wall of each each room or designate a room. Make the home appear neat and very impersonal. The packed boxes stacked neatly don't classify as clutter. Maybe paint a wall or two, get your closets in order, and keep everything sparkling clean. I've seen stagers that had homeowners buy new furniture, paint every room - why$%: All you need do is use common sense... pack it up or put it away.
