今日は、長文を読むためのコツを解説していきます。
長文読解をしていく上で、学校や塾でスラッシュリーディングを聞いたり学んだと思いますが、今回は精読を解説していきたいと思います。
精読というのは、主語、動詞、補語、目的語を分けて、その文章は、誰が(何が)どういった動作をする(どういった状態になる)のかなどを見ていくことです。
例えば、
Ms. Smith always walks to her workplace.
この文章は、この様に分解できます。
Ms. Smith/ always/ walks/ to her workplace.
Ms. Smithは主語
walksは動詞
alwaysとto her workplaceは修飾語句
そして、この文章で一番大切なことは、Ms. Smithがwalkしているという事です。alwaysは特に必要では無い。to her workplaceは目的地なので重要になってくる。
この様に、文章を5文型に分けて、主語、動詞、補語、目的語に分けていけば、筆者が言いたいことを読み取ることができます。
しかし、長文はこんな簡単なものばかりでは無く、非常に長いものももちろん出てきます。
例えば、
The Human Resouces director stressed that the professor's contract must definitely include a clause about information protection.(出典：公式TOEIC Listening & Reading問題集 5)
この文章は、まずこの様に分解してみましょう。
The Human Resouces director stressed that the professor's contract must definitely include a clause about information protection.
The Human Resouces directorは主語
stressedは動詞
that the professor's contract must definitely include a clause about information protectionは動詞の後にあるから補語もしくは目的語。
しかし、stressは他動詞なので目的語になる。
that以下が目的語だと分かっても、何をするのか分からないと意味がないので、これも分解してみよう。
するとこうなる。
the professor's contract must definitely include a clause about information protection
the professor's contractは主語
must助動詞
include動詞
a clauseは目的語
definitelyとabout information protectionは修飾語句になる。
そして大切な部分を抜き出して見てみると、The Human Resouces director(人事部長)はthe professor's contract(教授の契約書)にはa clause(ある項目)をinclude(含める)事をstress(強調)したとなる。
この様に、文を5文型に分解していくと筆者の言いたいことがわかる様になってくると思います。
そして、これを続けていくと、英文に必要な要素が分かってくるので、writingの成績も伸びてきます。
