早朝山へ繰り出して己がハンマーの音を聴いた
When John Henry was a little baby, sittin’ on his daddy’s knee,
ジョンヘンリーは赤子の頃、お父ちゃんのお膝の上、
picked up a hammer and a little piece of steel,said,
ハンマーと鉄屑を手にこう言った
“Hammer will be the death of me lord, god, just the hammer will be the death of me...”
”このハンマーを奮って僕は死ぬよ”と
Well, John Henry’s family needed money, said he didn’t have but a dime,
ジョンヘンリーの家族は貧乏で、10セント玉ぽっちしか家に無かった
if you wait till the rising sun goes down,
登った朝日が沈むまで待てば
I’ll get it from the man in the mine, lord
lord, I’ll get it from the man in the mine...”
炭鉱の男からもらってくるよ
Well the captain said to John Henry, John Henry what can you do?
親方がジョンにこう言った、”ジョン、お前はいったい何ができる？”
I can hoist a jack, I can lay a track, I can pick and shovel too, lord, god,
I can pick and shovel too...
”ジャッキの巻き上げ、線路敷き、鉄打ち、ショベルも使えるぜ”
Well, John Henry said to the captain,” Oh, a man ain’t nothing but a man,
ジョンは親方にこう言った、”所詮、人は人でしかない
but let your steam drill beat me down,
でももし俺が蒸気ドリルに負けたなら
well I’ll die with a hammer in my hand, lord, god, I’ll die with the hammer in my hand“
俺はハンマーを手にして死んでやる”
Well, the captain said to John Henry, I’m gonna bring me a steam drill ‘round,
親方はジョンにこう言った、”俺、蒸気ドリル持ってくるよ、
gonna bring me a steam drill out on a job, go whah that steel on down, lord lord, go whop that steel on down...
蒸気ドリルを仕事に使えば、鉄なんてホイっと打ち込めちゃうぜ”
Well, John Henry said to his shaker, “Shaker why don’t you sing?
ジョンヘンリーは彼の＊シェイカーに言った ”おいシェイカー、歌でも歌ったらどうだ？
Throwin’ 15 ponds from the hips on down,
15ポンドを尻からブン廻し
listen to the cold steel ring, lord, lord, won’t you listen to the cold steel ring “
冷てえ鉄の鳴る音、聴きねえ、聴きねえ...”
Well, the man who invented the steam drill, thought he was mighty fine,
蒸気ドリルの発明者は自分はたいそうな男とうぬぼれた
John Henry drove his fifteen feet, and the steam drill only made nine, lord, lord, the steam drill only made nine.
ジョンヘンリーは鉄杭を15フィートも打ち込んだが、
蒸気ドリルが打ち込んだのはたったの9フィート
Well the captain said to John Henry, “ Oh, your mountain sinkin’ in.”
親方はジョンに言った、”まるで山が崩れ落ちるようだ”
John Henry said to the captain, oh my,
ジョンいわく、おや、まあ、
“Aint nothing but my hammer sucking wind, lord, lord, ain’t nothing but my hammer sucking wind. “
”あれは俺のハンマーの勢いで出るただの風の音さ”
Well, John Henry said to the captain, “ Look a yonder, what I see?
ジョンは親方に言った、”見てみな、遥か彼方に何が見える？
hole done choke, your drill done broke, and you can’t drive steel like me, no, no you can’t drive steel like me... “
穴は詰まるわ、ドリルは折れるわで、機械は俺ほど上手く鉄を打てねえだろう”
Well, John Henry drove in to the mountain, yes, his hammer was striking fire,
ジョンは山へと繰り出して、ハンマーは火を噴く程の絶好調
he drove so hard, he broke his old heart,
激しく打ちすぎ心臓を壊し
well, he laid down his hammer and died, lord, lord, he laid down his hammer and he died.
彼はハンマーを横たえ死んじゃった
Well, John Henry had a little woman, and her name was Polly Ann,
ジョンヘンリーには女がいた、彼女の名前はポリー・アン
She walked down the track, never looked back,
振り返りもせず線路を歩み
Polly Ann drove steel like a man, lord, lord, Polly Ann drove steel like a man.
鉄打ち始めたポリー・アンの姿はまるで男のよう
Well people took John Henry to the white house, and they buried him in the sand,
人々はジョンヘンリーをホワイトハウスへ連れて行き、砂の中へと埋葬した

機関車がうねりをあげて行き交うたびに、
“There lies a steel driving man, lord, lord.”,says “There likes a steel driving man...”, yes, there lies a ...
”ここにあの名にし負う「鉄打ち男」が眠る” と語った…
shaker(シェイカー)とは
長い鉄の棒（杭）を持つ役の男。岩盤に小さな穴を開け、その中にシェイカーが鉄杭を突っ込みその杭の尻を打ち役 (ドライバー) がハンマーで叩くのである。杭を打つ役と持つ役の二人一組で仕事をしていたようだ。ジョン・ヘンリーのシェイカーの名はビルと言う男だったそうだ。
シェイカーは杭が打たれた直後に石の破片を脇に出すために杭をねじっていた。こうして効率よく杭を打ち込めたらしい。そうして深く開いた穴の中にハッパを仕掛け爆破させて穴を開けていた。
蒸気ドリルは杭をねじるといったような芸当は出来ず石の破片が邪魔になりそれほど深くは打ち込めなかったようである。
だから
”ジョン・ヘンリーは15フィートも打ち込んだが
蒸気ドリルが打ち込んだのはたったの9フィート...”
というセリフは、そういうことだったのである。
この動画ではジョンヘンリーがコンテストで己の命と引き換えに機械を打ち負かし大勢の仲間の杭打ち職人たちを失職から救ったという感動的な筋書きだが、杭打ちの方法や蒸気ドリルの描写などは曖昧である。
こちらの動画ではシェイカーがどのような役割を果たし、またいかにしてジョンヘンリーや他の杭打ち職人達がトンネルを掘っていったかを詳しく説明している。お話の教訓として、人はいかにして誇り高く己の職に従事できるか、そして生身の人間がその気になれば機械以上の生産性を発揮でき得るということを我々に教えてくれるのである、とこの動画のオッサンは語ってくれている。
