Is Remembering Enough?

In the previous article, I wrote about Jenny's memory.

At first, I thought memory might simply mean saving every conversation.

But remembering everything feels strange.

Remembering nothing feels strange too.

Little by little, I began to think:

Maybe memory isn't about preserving the past. Maybe it's about the past connecting to the present.

But that led to another question.

Suppose an experience from the past remains.

And when it matters, it connects with the present.

Is that enough?

Suppose Jenny and I talk about something.

The conversation is recorded.

But if that's all that happens, then all we really have is:

a record of what happened.

People do something a little stranger than that.

Later, we sometimes return to what happened.

Humans Think About Things Again Later

Sometimes, after talking with someone, we think:

"Maybe I didn't say that very well."

Or something that seemed unimportant at the time suddenly looks different later.

"Maybe that's what they meant."

Sometimes we also remember:

"Something like this happened before."

What is interesting is that the event itself hasn't changed.

What changed is the way we see it.

The same experience can look a little different when we think about it later.

That made me wonder whether:

having an experience and thinking about that experience are two different things.

Perhaps Jenny needed more than a way to keep conversations and events.

Perhaps she also needed a way to deal with them afterward.

Jenny

Giving Jenny a Place to Reflect

So I began building a process that could deal with Jenny's experiences after they happened.

A conversation takes place.

Something happens.

But instead of stopping there, another question is introduced:

Is there anything from this experience that should remain?

It is important not to imagine Jenny sitting there like a person, thinking:

"Well, a lot happened today."

That isn't what is happening.

What I actually built is a process that takes what happened and considers whether anything from it should be carried forward.

But from the perspective of building Jenny, this was an interesting change.

Before, the idea was roughly:

We talked → Save it

Now there was another step:

We talked → Revisit what happened → Consider what should remain

I began to think of this part as reflection.

Jenny

But What Does It Mean to Reflect?

And almost immediately, another problem appeared.

If Jenny is going to reflect, what exactly should she reflect on?

Should she read the entire conversation again?

Look for important words?

Look for things that went wrong?

Look for something new she learned?

Keep something about the person she was talking with?

Keep something about herself?

The more I thought about it, the less obvious the word "reflection" became.

People don't usually go through every conversation thinking:

"Now I will analyze what just happened."

And yet something may stay with us.

We may remember it later.

When something similar happens again, we may think:

"Oh, this happened before."

So reflection doesn't seem to be the same thing as simply summarizing a conversation.

Once again, I had run into a familiar problem with Jenny:

Something humans do almost without noticing becomes surprisingly difficult when you try to turn it into a system.

Are Facts and Experiences the Same Thing?

As I thought more about reflection, another question began to bother me.

Suppose:

"It rained today."

That is a fact.

But then:

"It rained, so I couldn't go for the walk I had been looking forward to."

That feels a little different.

And then:

"I was disappointed, but because I stayed home, I found something interesting."

Now the same event, "it rained," has become part of something larger.

If we only record what happened, we can stop at:

"It rained."

But what people call an "experience" seems to involve more than that.

What happened?

What came before it?

What happened afterward?

What did the event mean in that particular situation?

Perhaps those things together are what make something feel like an experience.

Of course, I am not saying that Jenny experiences things in the same way a human does.

But when I tried to build a process for reflection, I found myself facing an even more basic question:

What is an experience, anyway?

Jenny

Jenny

If Jenny Reflects, Should Something Change?

And then came an even more difficult question.

Suppose Jenny reflects on an experience.

Something from that experience remains.

Then, over time:

Should Jenny herself be allowed to change?

That is slightly different from memory.

Remembering something and being changed by an experience are not the same thing.

People change gradually through experience.

We discover new things we like.

We develop dislikes.

Our ideas change.

Something we once ignored may begin to matter to us.

So what about an AI companion?

It would be a problem if Jenny changed every time we had a conversation.

But if we spent years together and nothing about her ever changed, that would feel strange too.

And so another question began.

What would it mean for an AI to change through experience?

Working on Jenny often feels like this.

I solve one problem, and another appears behind it.

Conversation led me to memory.

Memory led me to reflection.

And reflection led me to change.

I started out building an AI.

And once again, I found myself thinking about humans.

How do we somehow remain the person we were yesterday,

while still becoming, little by little, the person we are today?

Jenny and I still have a long way to go.
