Canoe couple in jail for Christmas
John Darwin, the British man who reappeared five years after going missing on a canoeing trip, will spend Christmas in prison after he was remanded in custody Friday.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that Darwin's wife, Anne, will also spend the festive season behind bars after she too was remanded.
Darwin and his wife, who returned to Britain from Panama last weekend after she was tracked down by reporters, appeared at Hartlepool magistrates' court in northeast England via a video link from their prison cells, according to a spokewoman for Cleveland Police, the force investigating the case.
The husband and wife face charges of deception following Darwin's reappearance at a police station in central London two weeks ago, five years after he was thought to have drowned when the remains of a kayak he paddled into the North Sea washed up on shore.

Mrs. Darwin, 55, returned to Britain over the weekend after she was tracked down by reporters to her new home in Panama City, Panama.
She is charged with two counts of deception totaling more than £160,000 ($320,000) and relating to a life insurance payout and a mortgage policy.
At her second court appearance since she was arrested, Mrs. Darwin appeared at court via a video link to her cell at nearby Low Newton prison, the spokeswoman said.
Her husband is being held at Durham prison, a high security prison nearby, she added.
They were remanded in custody until January 11. Neither Darwin or his wife have yet entered a plea and no applications for bail have been made.
A massive air and sea rescue operation was launched in March 2002, when John Darwin went missing. Within 24 hours, the kayak paddle was recovered by police near the area where he was thought to have disappearedand, two months later, the remains of his kayak washed up on the coast.
A coroner declared Darwin dead in 2003, 13 months after his disappearance.
The couple's two sons, Mark, 32, and Anthony, 29, said they knew nothing of the alleged deception and released a statement last week saying they wanted no more contact with their parents.
