The ox is often seen as the messenger of the gods Susanoo and Sugahara no Michizane.
It's said that because it's considered to `Gozutenno` is the same god with Susanoo, and because Michizane's date of birth and date of death fell on `the day of the Ox`. Also, Michizane was helped by a white ox because, it is said, he cared about it very much.
