英語も度胸、愛嬌、センス!

この単語は数えられるのかどうかわからない時ってありませんか?

今回はそれについて少し…


絶対的なルールはないんですが、同じような意味の単語でも、

具体的なものと、抽象的なもので分かれることが多いようです。


数えられる 数えられない

他に数えられないものは;

  • art, love, happiness
  • rice, sugar, butter, water
  • gas, power
  • news, currency

しかし、数えられる単語と一緒に使えばOKです。

  • a piece of news
  • a bottle of water
  • a grain of rice

a little, little, much, some, any :

  • It is a little worry.
  • I have little money.
  • I don't have much power.
  • I have some work.
  • Do you have any news?

数えられる名詞には

a few, few, many, some, any :

  • I have a few questions.
  • I have few dollars.
  • I have many pens.
  • I have some ideas.
  • Do you have any kids?

worry は単複どちらもあり。自分の心配は(複)

suitcase luggage
table furniture
battery electricity
onion garlic
report information
tip (ヒント) advice
journey travel
job (職) work (仕事)
story history


また、通常数えられない単語でも、呼び名であったり具体的な例を挙げるときなどは数えることができます。

There are two hairs in my coffee! hair I don't have much hair.
There are two lights in our bedroom. light Close the curtain. There's too much light! 
Shhhhh! I thought I heard a noise. noise It's hard to work when there is too much noise.
Do you have a paper to read? (= newspaper) paper I want to draw a picture. Do you have some paper?
Our house has seven rooms. room Is there room for me to sit here?
We had a great time at the party. time Do you have time for a coffee?
Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's greatest works. work I have no money. I need work!
