"place" には たくさんの意味がありますが、その
ひとつに、
「競馬の第２着」
という意味があります。
"bet on the horse to place" は 「２着の馬に
賭ける」という意味になります。
しょっちゅう競馬に出かけては お金を使う 競馬好き
(horseplayer) が 登場する お話が あります。
ヒッチコック劇場 "The Horseplayer" です。
上記 "place" が オチ になっています。
ちょっと覗いてみることにいたしましょう。
「Amian 牧師は 小さな教会で務めている。
教会の財政状況は 芳しくなく、屋根の修理
に かなりの費用が必要なのだ。
水曜礼拝の時に 見知らぬ男が 10ドル札を
募金箱に入れた。
募金箱で ひときわ目立った この大金は
ずっと勝ち続けて 神様のお蔭だと感謝をして
いる競馬狂の Sheridan という男が入れた
のだ、と Amian 牧師は 知った。
どうやら Sheridan は １着の馬に願を懸けて
それが ずっと 当たっていたようである。
(The Reverend Amian is the pastor of a small church.
Father Amian's church isn't in very good shape and needs
an expensive new roof.
At a mid-week service, a stranger leaves a $10 bill in the
collection plate. Father Amion discovers that the large
amounts of money turning up on the collection plate come
from a grateful horseplayer Sheridan who has hit a winning
streak. Sheridan has apparently prayed to win and has been
successful. )
「Amian 牧師は 賭け事を嫌っていた。
Sheridan は 礼拝の常連になり、ずっと 大金を
気前よく寄付し続けた。
で、Sheridan は Amian 牧師に 競馬の予想を
してあげた。
それに乗った Amian 牧師は 屋根の修理費用
を捻出しようとして 教会の貯えから 500ドルを
Sheridan に預け、勝ち馬に賭けるようにと 彼に
頼んだ。
Sheridan は きっと 勝ち馬に賭ける、と言って
Amian 牧師を 安心させた。
が、牧師は お金を彼に預けた後 すぐに 自身の
軽率な振る舞いを後悔した。
気がとがめた 牧師は 賭け馬が 勝たぬようにと
祈った。
Sheridan が 帰ってきた。
賭け馬は 惜しい処で １着を逃した、という。
もう 金輪際 競馬の賭けは 止める、と約束した。
これには Amian 牧師も 大喜びした。
だが、 Amian 牧師は 驚いた。
なんと、Sheridan が 賭け金に 少しだけ足し前
したお金を 牧師に返したのだ。
実は Sheridan は １着には賭けずに ２着の馬に
賭けたのだった。」
(Father Amian disapproves of gambling.
Sheridan becomes a regular attendee and continues to make
generous donations. He gives Father Amian a tip on a horse.
The priest gives him $500 of the church's savings to bet on a
"sure" winning horse to try to cover the roof repair cost.
Sheridan convinces Father Amian to place a bet on a sure
thing and Amian regrets his rash act as soon as it's done.
Feelings guilty, he prays for the horse not to win.
Sheridan returns with news that the horse just missed win-
ning, and declares that he will stop gambling, which pleases
Father Amian.
However, Father Amion is surprised to get his money back
with a little extra, because Sheridan put his bet on the
horse to "place", not to the winning horse. )
口先だけでは 止めた、と言っているものの、この
"horseplayer" は この先も 競馬狂で あり続ける
ような気が いたします。
