楽聖ベートーベンが聴力を失ったことはよく知られて
います。
が、まだ ６０歳半ばだった彼が 何故亡くなったのか
その死因については まだ 確定的なことが分かって
いるわけではないようです。
また、最期のことばについても いろいろと 取り沙汰
されているようです。
ちょっと見てみることにいたしましょう。
Ludwig van Beethoven
(1770 - 1827)
「彼は 腹部の痛みと脹れを訴え ずっと 気分が
すぐれなかった。 前年のクリスマスから 気分
が悪くてベッドから出られなかった。
彼の友人たちは 彼の命はが そう長くないだろう
ことを知っていた。
彼、ベートーベンは、1827年3月27日月曜日に
天に召された。 齢は満５６であった。
その死因については いつも 噂が立っていた。
梅毒であったのか。毎晩の酒浸りが過ぎて肝硬変
になったのか。確かに 彼はお酒が好きだった。
本当の死因は 鉛中毒によるものだった、という
のが最も蓋然性が高いだろう。
ベートーベンは幅広い種類のワインを嗜んでいた。
が、当時 手に入る手頃なワインには鉛が添加されて
いたのだ。
死後解剖結果では 肝臓が硬変により縮んでしまって
いた。」
(He’d been sick for a while, complaining of stomach pains
and bloating. Since the previous Christmas, he’d been so
ill he hadn't got out of bed, and his friends knew that that
would be the end. Beethoven went on a Monday, March
the 27th 1827. He was just 56. There have always been
rumours about what caused Beethoven’s death. Was it
syphilis? Was it cirrhosis of the liver from too many nights
on the sauce? He did enjoy a drop. It’s most likely that
the actual cause of his death was lead poisoning.
Beethoven was fond of drinking quite a range of wine, but
a favourite was a type of wine you could get in those days
that was fortified with lead. His autopsy revealed a shrunken
liver due to cirrhosis. )
「そもそも あの月曜日の午後は何か劇的な天候で
あった。ウイーンは 悪天候で荒れ狂っており、彼の
友人たちが彼のベッドの傍らで静かに座している時
も 窓に吹きつける激しい雨音だけが聞こえていた。
実際 何人の友人たちがその部屋にいたのかを知る
由もないが、最も密なる親友 Anselm Huttenbrenner
は、彼の義理の妹同様に、おそらく その部屋にいた
であろう。 彼の弟 Johann と 秘書の Karl Holz も
いたであろう。
激しい雨音と どれだけの人たちがその部屋にいたか
によって、ベートーベンが最期に発したことばを どう
聞いたかに違いが出てきていることの説明がつく。
或る者は ”喝采だ、友たちよ、喜劇は終わった ! ”
が最期のことばだと言い、
或る者は ”天国では耳が聞こえるぞ” と 耳の不自由
なことを引き合いに出して最期のことばを言ったとし、
更に、息を引き取る寸前に彼が天に向かって怒りの
拳を突き上げた、とも伝えられている。
彼の最期のことばは おそらく そんなに目立つもので
もなく、劇的なものでもなかったであろう。
ひとりの友人がワインをひと箱 持って来た時に 彼が
こう言ったと記録されている。
”残念、残念..........遅すぎだよ”
ひょっとして そのワインは 彼が好んで飲んだ 鉛添加
のワインではなかったろうか。」
(For a start, that Monday afternoon had some suitably dramatic
weather. Vienna was ravaged by a vicious thunderstorm and, as
Beethoven’s friends waited silently around his bed, it would
have been to the sound of rain drumming the window.
We’re not sure exactly how many of these friends were in the
room. Beethoven’s closest friend, Anselm Hüttenbrenner, was
probably one of them, as was his sister in law. And Beethoven’s
brother Johann and his secretary Karl Holz were around too.
Which probably accounts for how many different versions there
are of Beethoven’s last words. One story is that he said,
“Applaud, my friends, the comedy is over!” Another is that,
talking about his deafness, he said “I shall hear in heaven!”
Or that he shook his fist in anger at the heavens in the moments
before death.
It’s most likely that his last words were a lot less showy, less
dramatic. A friend brought a case of wine for him, and he is
recorded having said “Pity, pity... too late.” I wonder if it was
that lead stuff he liked drinking. )
