Situated 150 km from Milan, close to the Swiss border, Valmalenco belongs to the winter resort of Alta Valtellina which can be divided into three small villages: Chiesa, Casapoggio and Lanzada. With great skiing history, secure snow fall and having hosted a series of FIS World Cups, the FIS Council chose Valmalenco to be the organiser of the FIS Junior Freestyle Ski Championships in 2012.
From Snowboarding to Freestyle SkiingG
Valmalenco hosted the FIS Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard World Cup rand finals in 2008 and have been part of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup ever since. In 2008 in addition to 2011 they also successfully hosted the FIS Junior Snowboard Championships. In order to host competitions in all events, the resort of Valmalenco undertook a great investment in building a new infrastructure. A new halfpipe as well as a aerials big air site were built to ensure the best possible courses. Being an experienced organiser they have a strong organising committee and excellent courses preparation.
Fourth time of hosting all events in the Juniors Championships
With a complex venue with the necessary infrastructure already present and the experienced crew, Valmalenco will run competitions in all FIS Freestyle Skiing events. Having had the events separated the last seasons, FIS is happy to have all events gathered again. Valmalenco will run competitions in moguls, dual moguls, halfpipe, aerials/big air, ski cross and slopestyle.
Increased Freestyle Skiing interest in Italy
Andrea Rinaldi, part of the Italian Ski Federations Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Commission and a member of FIS Freestyle Skiing Committee has been working hard to provide all these new opportunities in the Junior Championships. He has informed FIS that there has been a strong growth of Freestyle Skiing in Italy. By getting the opportunity to host the Junior Championships FISI is positive the growth and interest around the sport will continue to increase.
The date of the competitions will be during the week of 19th to 25th of March 2012.
