ギルロイ市のＨＰを見ると歴史については次のようにある。
要約すると、まだ定かではないようだが５０００年程前から住んでいたという説があるがOHLONEオーロン？といわれる原住民が住んでいた。現在のギルロイの辺にはUnijaimasアニファイマス？族といわれる部族が住んでいた。そこに１８世紀頃スペイン人の居住が始まった。隣町のホリスターには１７９０年ころのサンファンバチスタミッションがある
１８４８年アメリカメキシコ戦争にてアメリカが勝利しカリフォルニアがアメリカになった。市のギルロイという名前については、ノルウェー船？の捕鯨船がモンタレー湾に来ていた。それに乗り込んでいた水夫ジョンカメロンギルロイという名前のスコットランド人が定住したことでついたという説がある。
