One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him and the other to the LORD.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome time in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."
The LORD replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

ある晩、男は夢をみました。神様と彼が海辺を歩いている夢です。空を見上げると
彼の歩んだ各場面の人生のシ－ンがフラッシュされ、どの場面でも2つの足跡が砂の上に残っているのがわかりました。一つは彼自身の足跡、もう一つは神様のものでした。
彼の人生の最後の場面が映し出された時、男は砂の上の足跡を見返しました。彼は気づきました。人生の中でもっともつらく、厳しく、悲しかった場面では砂の上には一つの足跡しか残っていなかったのです。
男は悩み、神様に質問しました。「神様 わたしはあなたに従うと決めたときに、あなたは、常に一緒に歩いてくれるといいましたよね？でも、私は気づいたのです。私の人生の中で厳しく、つらい場面では足跡が一つしか残っていませんでした。何故あなたの助けが一番必要な時にはわたしのことを見捨てたのでしょうか？」
神様は答えました。「わたしの大事な大事な子供よ、私はあなたを愛しています。そして絶対にあなたのことを見捨てたりしません。あなたの人生でつらく悲しいときの場面で見た一つの足跡は私のものです。そう、あなたを抱きかかえていた私の足跡だったのです。」
