今日の英語学習 日本の少年少女がスケートボードで金メダルという快挙！

でも、ま、そんなに読者もいないんです・・・

先日のDMM英会話。

ディリーニュースを読み意見を交換しました。

今回のニュースは日本の若者２人がスケートボードで金メダルを獲ったというニュースについてでした。

特に１３歳の西矢の金メダルは快挙だったという内容でした。

また、スケートボードで街を走ると、公共物を破壊したり事故を引き起こしたりと、あまり良いイメージがなかったけれど、こうして正式な競技になることで、世界に認められていくことはいいことだ、みたいな話でした。

そのニュースの質問について私は下記の様に答えました。

1. What are your thoughts on skateboarding's first Olympic champions?

Because skateboarding wasn't popular with Japanese people, I was very surprised that the two young Japanese won a gold medal at the Olympics. I am very proud of them as a Japanese. They are very young pioneers of skateboarding at the Olympics. Additionally, I was also surprised that the skateboarding has been included in this Olympics.

2. Do you skate? If so, who taught you? If not, do you know many skaters?　（堀米選手は子供の頃スケートをしていたというニュースの流れからの質問でした。）

No, I don’t. I had done skating when I was an elementary school student, but I have never done skating for a long time. I like figure skating and I'm a fan of Yuzuru Hanyu.

3. Would you say that people in your country are accepting of skateboarding? Why? Why not?

Elderly people in Japan may find it difficult to accept skateboarding, but the situation may be changed by the two gold medalists at this Olympics. Many boys and girls will admire to do skateboarding, and many parents will support them, so I think the situation will be better in the future.

4. What impact do you think skateboarding's inclusion in the Olympics will have on the sport?

I didn’t recognize skateboarding as a sport before. I thought that it was just a child’s game or for juvenile delinquents. However, skateboarding has been evolving for a long time, and it was recognized as a Major Olympic sport. So, a lot of new sports may be become Major Olympic games.

5. Are there any extreme sports you'd like try someday?

I wouldn’t like to try any sports any more in my age, but I am interested in e-sports. I didn’t like to do sports in my school age, but I might have had a chance if I did e-sports when I was young. My son doesn’t like doing sports either, but he has a talent for e-sports, so he also might have had some chances..  

日本では公道でスケボーをすることは禁じられています。なので、日本人はあまりスケボーになじみがないと思っていたのに、この快挙は本当に凄いと思います。

スケートボードをやっている人なんてチャラいと思っていた私、おばさんの意識を変えなくてはいけないな、と思いました。

金メダル、おめでとうございました。

やっぱり英語から離れると一気に話せなくなりそうで。

さて、先日は

アメリカ人は気分を上げるために何をしているか

という題名のディリーニュースでした。

アメリカ人がどういう方法で気分を上げているか例を出した後、ストレスフルな現代社会について触れ、気分が滅入る人も多いということが書いてありました。

ストレスフルな社会で暮らす中、それを軽減する工夫をしている人が多いとのこと。

そして、２００７年のある学説によれば、約半分のアメリカ人が生涯どこかで精神疾患を患う可能性があるという、内容でした

その記事について、問いに答えて先生とディスカッションしました。

Discussion

1.     What are your thoughts on the findings of this survey?

When I was younger, people in the world just worked hard without worrying about their mental health. After I read the article, I thought that many people might have wanted to worry about their mental health even at that time, so I think that thinking about their mental health is useful for people. Additionally, I was surprised they have various ways to improve their mood. I was also surprised that about half of Americans develop a mental illness at some time in their life.

2.     Do you find it surprising that 43% of Americans use food to improve their mood? Why? Why not?

No, I don’t. I already knew that American people used food to improve their mood because I used to live in the USA. However, when I went to the USA, I was surprised by people who cared about choosing food because I thought there was only unhealthy food there.

3.     What are your favorite mood-boosting activities?

These are drinking coffee and doing yoga. Coffee makes me wake up clearly, and doing yoga makes me relax because I can breathe deeply. I attend a pottery studio once a week. Doing pottery makes me feel relaxed and happy too.

4.     What do you make of the fact that one in 10 Americans say they're only in a good mood one day a week?

Even though we live in a convenient modern city, we have a lot of negative things impact on our mental health like stressful life events, poor sleep and stress in general. I feel sad. I think that living the present age is very stressful although the environment surrounded by us is very convenient.

5.     Do you think that diet has an impact on mental health? Why? Why not?

Yes, I do. I do not feel well when I do not care about what I consume. A well-balanced diet has an impact on good mental health.

私から見たらさっぱりとしていて執着も抑圧も少ないアメリカ人ですら、半分の人が精神疾患を患うという話。とても恐ろしいと思いました

アメリカ以上にストレスフルで制約が多く抑圧的な日本社会。日本人の心は大丈夫でしょうか

気分を上げる方法を見つけて、リフレッシュしていきたいと思います。

今日の英作文 天然パーマの酷さを比較級を使って表す

先日、比較級の勉強をしました。

で、比較級を使って自分の天然パーマを表現してみました。

アメリカにいた頃の先生とレッスンしました。

天然パーマについては、以前も書きました

私の天然パーマ、どんだけ酷いんでしょうか

コロナで引きこもったのでやっと縮毛矯正が取れたのですが、もう天然パーマが広がって心が折れそうです。

というわけで、こんな文章ができました

The humidity in Japan is much higher than in the US, so my hair becomes bigger and bigger as the rainy season is coming. June is the worst season for me in Japan because my hairstyle gets messier and messier from rain. I’m worried about that. However, the drier the weather, the worse I feel. Too much dry weather isn’t comfortable for me either. My elder sister and younger brother also have natural wavy hair the same as mine, but their hair isn’t as wavy hair as mine. My hair is the waviest in the family. It makes me irritated sometimes.

By the way, there are fewer opportunities that I speak English in Japan than I used to have in the US, so the lesson is one of the most important chances for me to speak English in my current life. Thank you very much.

陶芸教室 どんぶりを作ろうと思います。

本当に久しぶりに日本で陶芸を再開したので、まだまだ、形が定まらず。

今回は前回のボウルよりはちょっと大きくして、どんぶりを作ろうと思い、がんばりました。

左から２番目のは下の板がずれてしまい、歪んでしまったので、器の上を削りました

 

どんな仕上がりにしようか検討中です。

細かいものを彫るのには老眼がちょっと辛かったです

今日の英語学習 疲労時のカフェインは一部のタスクにだけ効果があります

今日のDMM英会話は、DMM上で６月４日に出たディリーニュースを読みました。

疲労時のカフェインは一部のタスクにだけ効果があります

というもの。

内容としては、

カフェインは目を覚まし、タスクに取り組む能力を向上させる可能性がるけれど、医療ミスや自動車事故などを引き起こす可能性のある手続き上のエラーを防ぐには、あまり役に立たないことが分かった、ということでした。

もしカフェインが睡眠不足の後の処置ミスを大幅に減少させることが研究で示されていれば、睡眠不足で複雑な作業を行わなければならない外科医やパイロットなどの人々にとってとても重要なニュースになっただろうけど、カフェインにそこまでの効果はないそうです

だから、適切な睡眠をとることが私たちにとっては重要だそうです。

この記事に対しての英語の質問に答え、先生に添削していただきました。

1.     What are your thoughts on the findings of this study?

I was disappointed with this study because I expected that caffeine would help us to be more efficient in completing certain tasks, but it only helps us with basic stuff. I have known for a long time that sleeping is very important for humans, but now I know that we need to sleep much longer each night. I think that now I will change my life by trying to sleep longer.

2.     When was the last time you had a sleepless night?

It was last night. Because I would have this lesson, I was a little nervous because I didn’t want to oversleep. Usually, I would sleep longer on the weekends. But don’t mind that because it’s my own personal problem. 

3.     Do you drink much coffee? If so, what time of day do you usually have it? If not, why not?

Yes, I drink two mugs of coffee every morning. Coffee refreshes me and clears my mind. However, drinking coffee late in the evening sometimes interferes with my sleep.

4.     What would you say is the most difficult aspect of your job?

I am a housewife now, so I can’t remember that. I didn't think I did such a responsible work. However, I used to be careful about relationships with coworkers.

5.     Would you rather be a surgeon or pilot? Why?

I would rather be a pilot because a pilot is not more responsible than a surgeon. I heard that the system of cockpit is controlled well by AI, so I think that it would be easier to work as a pilot than a surgeon. Additionally, I am afraid of seeing blood.

と、いう感じでした。

問い５の、外科医は血をみたくないし責任が重いから、なるならまだパイロットの方がいい、という答えは、ちょっとどうかと思いましたが、まあ、仮定なので・・・

数ヶ月後にＴＯＥＩＣ受けます

受ける月も大体決めましたが、それはおいおいと・・・

今日のDMM英会話はDairy News を読んでディスカッションしました。

私は、会話にすると意思疎通はできても適当な英語になってしまうので、一応答えを文章にしています。

そうして添削してもらい、何度か読んだりしてフレーズを覚えるようにしています。

DMM英会話の教材は会員登録していない人は見ることができないのかな

良く分からないのですが・・・

私が学んだのは、６月２日のディリーニュースの記事でした。

おそらくこちらのニュースを短くして英語にした感じです。

こちらのニュースについて、設問に答えました。

1.    What are your thoughts on Osaka's decision to pull out of the French Open?

I felt sorry about Naomi Osaka because she had to pull out the important tournament because of her severe anxiety that was given by the media. I agree with her opinion that is, "I believe that the whole situation is kicking a person while they're down and I don't understand the reasoning behind it."  I think that the recent media tend to just want to earn money, and they don’t care if they hurt people. I feel angry. I think that the media has become huge, and they are competing to get more sensational information. Furthermore, I was surprised by the fine for skipping the post-match press conference. I hope that the media and the rules of the fine will be changed.

2.    Do you think tennis players should be allowed to skip post-match press conferences? Why? Why not?

Yes, I do. Because they are humans, not robots. Even though they look like superheroes, they can also feel happiness, sadness, anger and depression as we do. Then we should understand their minds. Nowadays, the social media is very developed, so athletes can send their messages through the social media.

3.    What do you make of Osaka's claim that people don't care about athletes' mental health?

I agree with her opinions. The recent media seek the sensational information, so they might not care about athletes’ mental health to get their benefit.

4.    What athletes do you personally admire? Do you follow them on social media?

I admire Yuzuru Hanyu, a figure skater. Even though he is young, the same age as my daughter, he is very strong and brilliant. He won the Olympic gold medals twice.
I know that there are some groups who support him, but I don’t want to join the groups because I don’t want the members to know my personal information.

5.    Do you watch tennis? If so, have you ever been to a professional tennis match? If not, why not?

No, I don’t. I’m not interested in tennis and the games are too long to watch. If I want to watch the whole game of tennis playing abroad　on TV, I have to stay up all night.

大坂なおみさん、とても才能に溢れた人なので、早く精神的に癒されて、戻られることを願っています。

メディアって、最初の２年くらいは物凄く持ち上げるのに、少し慣れてくると一気に落とす気がします。だから、なおみさんだけでなく多くのアスリートたちも記者会見とか怖いだろうな、って思います。

ソーシャルメディアが発達して、従来のメディアもより多くの情報を求めるようになったように思います。

また、多くの人が意見を言うようになり、ネガティブな意見も増えたことから、著名であればあるほど傷つくだろうと思います。

世の中が変わることを願います。

今日の英作文 コロナ禍、いつの間にか逆転していたアメリカと日本の立場

今日のDMM英会話はフリートークにして、日記を添削してもらいました。

日記というか、ボヤキのような・・・

先生はとてもきれいな英語を話す方で、添削も丁寧でした。

楽しいレッスンを受けました。

It has been 6 months since my husband and I came back to Japan. When we left the US, the situation was chaotic under the COVID-19 situation. I was afraid that I might get infected by the virus there, and I was disappointed with how the government handled the situation. It seems that President Trump didn't care about US people and the COVID 19. The presidential election was also confusing, so at that time, the newly elected president wasn’t decided yet. Last December, I was happy I came back to Japan. 
However, the situation was reversed. Now a lot of people in the US were already vaccinated including most of my friends, and they go out freely and happily. On the other hand, the vaccination in Japan is way behind schedule, and about half of Japanese population doubts the efficiency of the vaccine and are too afraid of the side effects of that. Some of them seriously believe in the conspiracy theory of Q-Anon. I think the vaccination will be delayed more.

 I’m worried about the Tokyo Olympic too. The Japanese government doesn’t explain the detail of the situation, so Japanese people are sometimes confused. 

I hope that the pandemic will be over soon or at least things will get better, so that we can go back to our normal lives.

フィリピンでも少なからずワクチンに懐疑的な人はいるそうです。

それは昔、フィリピンで別のワクチンで事故があったとのことで、それからワクチンを嫌う人もいるそうです。

世界は広くて、色々あるんだな、と思いました。

ワクチンについて、ちょっと不安になり色々調べてしまいました。

でも、ワクチンを推奨している動画や記事をたくさん読んで落ち着きました。

早く、このパンデミックが収まることを祈っています。

陶芸教室 電動ろくろで作った茶碗に絵付け

今日は雨でしたね。

降り方が懐かしい、日本の雨でした。

今日は週に一度の陶芸教室に行ってきました。

陶芸教室に行くようになってから、孤独や不安が和らいだように思います。

今日は、作っておいた茶わんボウルに絵付けをしました。

底を削ったのを載せるのを忘れました

底も、久しぶりに削りました。

で、絵を付けてみました。

なんだか、アメリカの時と色々やり方が違うのですが、日本の方がやっぱり言葉が理解できるので、分かりやすいです。

焼き上がりが楽しみです。

こちらの陶芸教室、上手な方ばかり・・・。

アメリカの時と同じ、相乗効果が狙えそうです

見習いたいです。

陶芸をすると、やっぱり心が落ち着きます。

私に合っている趣味なんだと思います。

永く続けていきたいです。

これから梅雨に入ると思いますが、どうかご自愛ください。
