A tiny ripple of hope の暗記十二回目：既に23日（日）の午後で、一日遅れになりましたが、一応22日の分です。今回、全訳をやります。どうも論理展開がピンと来ず、そのために日本語訳をやろうと思います。
And a third danger is timidity. Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the sensure of their colleagues and the wrath of their society. Moral courage is rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change the world-- which yields most painfully to change.
Aristotle tells us: "At the Olympic games it is not the finest or the strongest men who are crowned, but those who enter the lists." "So, too, in the life of the honarable and the good it is they who act rightly who win the prize." I believe that in this generation those with the courage to enter the conflict will find themselves with companions in every corner of the world.
For the fortunate amongst us, the fourth danger, my friends, is comfort, the temptation to follow the easy and familiar paths of personal ambition and financial success so grandly spread before those who have the privilege of an education. But that is not the road history marked out for us. There is a Chinese curse which says, "May he live in interesting times." Like it or not we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also the most creative of any time in the history of mankind.
And everyone here will ultimately be judged, will ultimately judge himself, on the effort he has contributed to building a new world society and the extend to which his ideals and goals have shaped that effort.
そして、3番目の危険性が臆病さです。ほとんどの人は職場の人たちが反対することをやろうとはしませんし、会社の人たちが禁止していることや社会の怒りを買うようなことに勇気をもって取り組もうとはしません。新しい道徳基準を作ろうと言う気持ちは戦場での勇気や偉大な知性よりも見当たりがたいものです。新しい道徳を作ろうとする勇気は世界を変えようとする人々に備わるべき必須の基本的な性格であり、世界は大きな痛みを伴ってこそ変わり得るものです。
アリストテレスは私たちに言います。「オリンピックの試合において 冠をいただくのは最も優れたものでも最も強いものでもなく、戦いの場へ自ら赴くものである。だから、名誉があり善良な人たちの生活においても、正しく行動する者のみがその報酬を勝ち取ることになる。」私は信じている、皆さんの時代において、紛争の場へ自ら赴こうと言う勇気を持つものは世界のどこにおいても自らが仲間とともにあることを見出すであろうと。
私たちの中で幸福な人たちに申しあげる、四番目の危険は、皆さん、安楽さなのです。個人の野望や経済的な成功という容易で見慣れた道をたどろうと言う誘惑であり、教育を受けると言う特権を持っている人々の眼前に広く広がっている誘惑です。しかし、これは歴史が私たちに指し示す道ではありません。中国の呪いの言葉があります、「彼が興味ある時代に生きますように。」という。好むと好まざるに関わらず、私たちは興味ある時代に生きているのです。危険と不確かさの時代ですが同時に人類の歴史の中で最も創造性に富む時代でもあるのです。そして、ここにいるだれでもが究極的に判決を下されるのです。誰でもが自らに判決を下す究極の時が来ます。新しい世界社会を作るために貢献した努力に基づいて、そして理想や目標がその努力をどの程度まで広げたかに基づいて。
上の訳が正しいかどうか判断が付きません。ただ、アリストテレスの言葉として言われているthe listsは名簿の意味ではなく試合の場、戦いの場という意味だそうです。これはネット上の英語サイトに質問して確認しました。また、"May he live in interesting times."は「彼に災難が降りかかりますように」という意味です。interesting は「面白い」と訳されますが、funnyの「面白おかしい」が単なる感覚的な面白さであるのに対し、経済的な利害関係を伴った興味のある状態を示します。
