It is said that we repeatedly check something or wash our hands even though we know it is ridiculous, but what do we really know when we say it is ridiculous? For example, is it foolish to check the source of a fire just before going out? If a fire breaks out, there's really no way to get rid of it, so it's not a bad idea to make sure everything is safe.
On the other hand, if you have germs on your hands and you wash your hands many times, this is really stupid because there is no need to wash your hands even if there are germs. The person who washes his or her hands is really an idiot. It's like when you spit on a grave, you don't want to be rude because you think you might get hurt. This is foolishness.
