Edmonton's new world-class veterinary centre is a reflection of the value society places on pets, says a veterinary surgeon.

"It's not 'the dog on the farm' anymore," says Dr. Dave Fowler. "Pets are really part of people's families now.

"The culture has evolved and veterinary medicine has evolved to respond to it."

A result of that evolution can be found in a strip mall at 56th Avenue and 99th Street, the site of Guardian Veterinary Centre, a 20,000-squarefoot facility that opened for business in August.

Fowler is one of two surgeons at the centre, which is also staffed by a cardiologist, a critical care specialist, internal medicine specialists, four full-time emergency vets and four other vets who do part-time emergency work.

The facility is open 24/7 and features three fully-equipped operating rooms that use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. It also has an MRI, a CT scanner and the latest ultrasound equipment.
