青の単色調ということで色を塗ったバージョンもありますが、今回は白黒バージョンを紹介したいと思います。何も見ないで描いたインク絵で、鉛筆の下絵などを作らないでフェルトペンおよび筆ペンで描きました。
I also made a blue monochromatic version of this drawing, but this time around I want to put up the black and white version. This is an ink drawing I drew without any reference. I drew it with a felt tip pen and brush pen without any preparatory pencil under drawings.
影を写実的な印象を与える要素というより、デザイン性を感じさせる要素としての使い方を追求し続けています。以前に明部と暗部の差を大胆に大きくすることで知られている「シン・シティー」という映画化もされた白黒漫画を描いているフランク・ミラー及び同じように映画化された漫画である「ヘルボーイ」を描いている「明暗差表現名人」と言っても良いマイク・ミニョーラに、インク絵の影やコントラストの面で影響を非常に受けていると言いましたが、今回もそのような非日常的なコントラストを追求しました。
Instead of using shadow as an element to infuse a realistic feel, I am currently pursuing the path of using it as an element that gives drawings a cool design feel. Before, I spoke a bit about how I have been extremely influenced by the shadows and contrast in ink drawings from artists Frank Miller and Mike Mignola. Miller draws a black and white comic called "Sin City" that is known for its dynamic contrast of light and dark and Mike Mignola, who could be called the king of light and dark contrast, draws "Hellboy," another comic that has also been made into a movie. This time around as well, I tried again for that same type of feel that surpasses everyday reality --- inspired by their works.
そして、オランダの画家であるレンブラントの作品に良く見る「キアロスクーロ」という、明部と暗部の差を大きくする色遣いについて語りましたが、ここで紹介する色々な作品を用意したり、解説文を描いたりしているうちに、油絵の色のコントラストを高くした昔の画家であるレンブラントおよびインク絵の白黒のコントラストを高くしている現代漫画家であるミラーおよびミニョーラにコントラストの高さが共通点であることに気付きました。
Also, I previously wrote about chiaroscuro, a way of using color to heighten the contrast of light and dark that is often seen in the works of the Dutch painter Rembrandt. Well, in the midst of preparing all kinds of different works to show here and writing explanations to go with the works, I came to realize that high contrast is the common thread that runs through both Rembrandt, the painter of days of old who used high contrast in his oil colors, and modern comics artists Miller and Mignola, who use high contrast in their black and white ink drawings.
学生時代からレンブラントの作品は非常に面白いと思っていましたが、あくまで大学で勉強しなければいけない美術史の内容としてしか見ていませんでした。つまり、私にとっては、勉強しなければいけない内容の中に、見てもつまらないと思わなかった存在でした。こんなに素晴らしい作品の数々をもっと自ら、積極的に見ようとしていないのは、おそらく、何よりも好きな漫画や現代イラストの世界、とくに油絵具などを使わないインク絵の世界ではあまり利用できない描き方だと間違えて判断してしまったからだと思います。美術も映画も現実の世界も含めて、色々なことを見るのが好きですが、自分の作品に利用できないと判断したらあまり見ようとしないくせもあるかもしれません。どんな素晴らしい光景に出合っても、風景画にはまっていなければ、それほど美しいと思えないとも思ったことがあります。
I really liked Rembrandt's works during my student days, but when all is said and done I suppose I only really looked at them as things that I had to study for my art history courses. In other words, for me, I suppose they were really nothing more than items amongst all of the things that I had to study at the time that I could look at and not feel bored. I suppose the reason that I did not more actively pursue looking at Rembrandt's incredible plethora of awesome works was that I mistakenly made the assumption that they didn't really offer anything for me to use in the realm of my main love: comics and modern illustration, and especially the world of ink drawings that do not use oil paints. I love looking at all sorts of things, including fine art and movies and the real world around us. But I guess I might have the tendency to not pursue looking at things if I feel that they won't be of use in my own creation process. I have even judged scenery as not beautiful simply because I was not into doing landscapes at the time, no matter how awesome the scenery really was.
この悪いくせを直すことができるかどうかは分かりませんが、少なくともレンブラントの作品は私が制作しているインク絵という分野にも非常に関連的な存在であることが気付きましたので、これから自らレンブラントの絵画、そしてプリントも積極的に見るようにしたいと思います。とても楽しみです。
I don't know if I will be able to fix this bad habit, but at least this time around I realized that Rembrandt's works are extremely linked to the genre of ink drawings that I like to draw, so so I really want to look at the paintings and prints of Rembrandt more in the future. In fact, I'm really looking forward to it.
