【霊犬早太郎説話】

今よりおよそ700年程も昔、

光前寺に早太郎というたいへん強い山犬が飼われていた。

当時今の静岡県磐田市見付天神社では

村を荒らす怪物に人身御供という悲しい風習があった。

その化け物が長野の早太郎を恐れていると聞いた旅の僧は

早太郎を連れ静岡へ。

見事、早太郎は怪物退治をやり遂げたが、

負傷した早太郎は光前寺につくと息をひきとったそう。

■Kozenji Temple

Kozenji Temple is one of the largest and oldest temples

in Nagano Prefecture, with a dozen pagoda towers.

The path to the temple is surrounded by moss

and giant Japanese cedar trees and continues

to the forest through a triple pagoda tower.

It is also famous for its weeping cherry blossom tree,

which will be lit-up from mid-April to early May while it blossoms.

■[What is the legend of Hayataro]

Approximately 700 years ago,

At Kozenji Temple, there was a very strong mountain dog named Sotaro. At that time, at Mitsuketenjin Shrine in what is now Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, there was a sad custom of making human sacrifices to the monsters that were destroying the village.

A traveling monk heard that the monster was afraid of Hayataro of Nagano.

I took Hayataro to Shizuoka.

Splendidly, Hayataro was able to exterminate the monster, but when he arrived at Kozenji Temple, he was injured and apparently took his last breath.
