Are you a fan of surfing ? Or of surfing fans.
When someone says "that guy was throwing fans", It means the surfer was spraying water off the rail of the board so hard it created what looks like a hand held fan.
Another term would be "throwing buckets", especially if the spray falls onto another surfing paddling out.
( look how much he is twisting his upper body away from the face of the wave )
Look how the fans of spray flies way over the surfer's head.
Also notice the line the surfer took to hot the thin lip of the oncoming closeout.
Big hacking fan. Down Up and Around. Looks like he's staring at a wall of water.
Do you have to be a big strong male to make fans of whitewater ? No, even females can make their own fans.
Maybe you need to have years and years of experience. Nope, even young kids can rip the top off waves.
Front side or Backside, done right, a surfer can make a fan of spray.
Shhhhhh ........... but sometimes I think it's easier on your backside.
During the past few weeks we been discussing being on rail and not absorbing your cutback.
When you start to understand the basics of turning a surfboard and start to push harder, go faster, increase angles and do it more in the critical part of the wave............ then you be throwing fans.
Who knows, maybe you'll be making fans of your own from those surfers at your local break checking you out.
