"I'm a Regular footer, so I always have a problem going Back Side and tend to only surf right hand breaks ".

Then you are missing out on 50% of surfing.

Study the next 2 photos.  What do you see ?

Surfer does a backside bottom turn to backside off the lip.  Correct.

But focus in on his Right hand.  Where is it in the 1st photo compared to the 2nd photo.

The front hand went back to twist the waist into the wave, then ripped forward to bring the nose back down.

Front arm rotating back at about 7 o'clock ( opposite orientation of the back arm at 1 o'clock )

See the board on the left rail and how much of the nose is out of the water.

Front arm now is in the front, where before it was in the back.

Board transitioned from Left rail to bottom to Right rail.

Apex of the turn,  hands go to "neutral" position as the board goes flat off rail.

But then she gets back on rail.   Front hand preparing to "OPEN".

( you can see her palm not her knuckles )

Wave begins to closeout, but look at the orientation of her front Left hand.  Palm open and up high.

Now as she blasts the closeout, her front arm rips down.  ( I think she made it ? )

Remember that "OPEN" palm from the above sequence.  Here another surfer uses the same open palm technique.

That is so critical to the Open/Close and twist of the waist In/Out to do a good Backside Bottom turn.

Front arm leads the turn / direction.  Back hand provides the drive.

A good bottom turn Backside ( and frontside ) sets up all maneuvers after it.  Cutbacks, Barrel rides and even Nose rides depend on a good bottom turn.

So yes, to improve your Backside Bottom turn and Backside surfing, you need to learn to lead with your front hand....... Open.

"WAIT A MINUTE !!   This surfer is doing a Frontside cutback !!"

That is right, the body dynamics/technique of a Backside Bottom turn is very similar to doing a Frontside cutback.

Thus if you improve your Backside surfing, your Frontside surfing will benefit also.

Don't be missing out on the other half of your surfing.
