祖父がつけた
「ジミン」という名前
2014年の「Haru Hana」とのインタビューで、ジミンは自分の名前を祖父がつけたと明かした。「ジ」（지）は知恵、知性、才能を意味し、「ミン」（민）は彼の場合、空や天を意味する。この名前は、才能が空のように広大で、思慮深く才能に恵まれる運命にある人物という意味を込めている。
彼の誕生前、両親は彼に関する象徴的な夢を見た。父は龍を、母は輝く唐辛子を実らせる大木を夢見た。韓国文化ではこれらは「胎夢（テモン）」と呼ばれ、子供の未来を映すとされる。龍は特に縁起の良い兆しとされ、成功や指導者となる運命の息子の誕生を象徴することが多い。一方、力強い木と輝くものは成長、回復力、卓越性を表す。
2023年、ジミンは最も美しい名前の意味を持つアイドルに選ばれた。
