Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the idea of getting fit$%: I know it can be pretty confusing with all the misinformation out there so here are a few tips to get the ball rolling.
First and foremost get clearance from your Physician before starting. Now to your tips.
1. For nutrition the best advice I can give would be to train yourself to drink 1 gallon of water every day and eat 5-6 supportive meals. Be sure those meals consist of whole food sources of proteins/fats and carbs with portions aligned with your goals.

2. A lot of beginners make the mistake of doing what everyone else is doing. First problem with that is most likely everyone else is doing something wrong. Train for your goals at your pace. Master your own body weight before you jump into free weights, machines and cables. There is no point in doing bench press if you can't do perfect push ups. Its next to useless to do leg extensions if you can't do perfect free squats with your own body weight (stay away from leg extensions regardless). Body weight moves first then free weights. You don't live life sitting down so don't train sitting down.
3. As for cardio, if you have to do it, do it quick. 30 minutes of intense interval type "stuff'. I for one have all my clients burn their calories through resistance workouts but if you love cardio machines keep it intense and always progress. Don't fall into the trap of doing the same thing over and over and over, mix it up.
Remember that exercise and better eating habits are choices... you can choose to eat better and exercise or not. Cliche as it is, the choice is yours.
