Well, that’s exactly what happened with SHINee’s “Odd.” Being SM Entertainment’s more experimental male group, they delved into unconquered K-pop territory with their lead single “View:” deep house. Written by lead vocalist Jonghyun, the song fools us into thinking it’s an uptempo ballad before reaching its techno peak at the chorus making it a great, laid back summer jam. However, the sounds that made them famous, the R&B-synth pop-funk hybrids, are still present in the LP with songs like “Romance” and “Farewell My Love.” And in terms of growth, “Odd Eye” is a sensuous feel-good track and “Lovesick” is part two of their debut song “Replay.”
Back in 2008, the guys were professing their love to a noona (older girl) who would only see them as a little brother. But in this new track, it’s the noona who wants in on the action. With “Odd,” SHINee pushed the K-pop envelope by experimenting and playing with old and new sounds, resulting in a fresh and evolved album. —Alexis Hodoyan-Gastelu
