I've probably watched this scene a dozen times after watching the movie. I grew up with an alcoholic father
who was a ships captain and harbor pilot In Northern Ireland. Now i am an Airline mechanic and very successful
at it too but guess what i too am inflicted with this horrible disease of alcoholism. It's the only disease known
to man that makes you think you do not have it! Addiction is not a choice, growing up in dysfunction is not a choice.
I think this movie gives a great insight to how it really is. I pray for anyone suffering addiction and distress.

I'm sure its been mentioned, but the airliner heard flying overhead at the end of the scene is quite significant.
Throughout the film there are several instances when he hears a plane flying overhead and looks up at it. In that final scene,
its as though he finally realises he is no longer a pilot and hence doesn't look up.
