受験の英語で問われているのは何力か
今度は私のコンピュータでlistenを検索してみました。
School students get a lesson once a week if they’re lucky, for less than an hour. That lesson explains grammar and introduces vocabulary. And then . . . whooosh, you might as well send them to Siberia.
These combined forces create a situation in which the teacher is speaking, everyone is nice and quiet, but nobody is listening. The message is being lost, and little learning is happening. It’s like teaching someone to swim by giving them weekly lectures on swimming. This situation exists in schools around the world, and unfortunately, does little to prepare people for the act of speaking. It’s certainly not unique to Japan. Some teachers just use too much stick and not enough carrot. At the risk losing some classroom control, it wouldn’t kill you to get people out of their seats and actually interacting with each other.

Because I teach intermediate level English learners preparing to go to grad school, my emphasis must always be on reading/writing/listening, not speaking. These types of exercises are so helpful to developing the "ear" for the language as well as the comprehension of cultural standards that are quite different from those of the students. Most foreign students speak their first language at home, so as many varieties of practice as possible is needed in language courses.
Practicing listening when learning a language
an essential component to both understanding and reproducing sounds,
as well as the rhythm, accent and inflections of speech.
Not everyone has access to a native speaker, class or lab--
but your desktop, laptop and handheld technologies can help.
■Listen to the whole conversation or story without interruption.
Summarize this "whole" and record, listen and compare.

■Testing in language learning often expects you to write, speak, etc.
Ask the teacher which skill (listening, speaking, writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) is tested! Prepare specifically for that skill.

そこで思い出すことがある。今を去ること30数年前、当時通っていた河合塾の英語の先生、土屋先生という先生だったが講義でこのように断言されておられた。「大学受験の英語に問われているのは英語力ではない。国語力だ」と。それを聞いて「えーっ」ととても意外だったので今でも良く覚えている。後年、自分がアメリカに行って自分の英語力の無力さに痛感して、土屋先生のおっしゃられたことは本当だったな、と。英語は得点源だったんですけどねー（笑）
アメリカ人のしゃべっていることは英語であることは分かるのですが、「このアメリカ人、一体何言ってんだろ？？？？」
相手だって私が分からないのは分かりますから「この人は英語が分からないんだな」と判断されちゃいました （泣）
あれから相当年数が経っているので、受験の英語も多少は改善されたんでしょうねー？？？
