It's the same in China! How funny! I totally use geography and pop icons to relate the material to my students. Oh and when it comes to pronunciation, I just have everyone be as exaggerated as possible when they pronounce something. I full on have them touch their face or show their teeth to get the sound. they feel silly, but when they get the sound right it makes all the difference.

In Japan, all English words which are necessary translate to the katakana English of Japan style.

Therefore, They do not know the true English pronunciation.

Also, there is embarrassment in being asked about their personal opinion suddenly, because we are brought up by the education of the passiveness to only hear the lecture of teachers.

In addition, they cannot talk because poor in English words.

However, apart from the quality of difference in the education, I consider that it will be really serious to teach Japanese students English in a way of Europe and America style.
