 Like all methods, some pupils take to it, others do not.
 
A natural bilingual is usually good at transferring thoughts from one of his languages to the other but often quite hesitant about doing this carefully, one word at a time. Something as simple as "I am hungry" has to be transposed into "I have hunger" in French or German, and into "There is hunger to me" in Latin or Romanian.

One can only reply "try it and see": translation does involve your understanding the basic strutures of your target language and how far and in which ways they differ from English.
 
But you could be taught a language directly, as a mother teachers her child, and just learn gradually to intuit the new way of thinking and talking.
