Kuerten makes emotional exit

Former world No. 1 Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten opened his farewell tour with a first round defeat in front of his home fans on Chris Chamberlain Jersey Tuesday, the 31-year-old falling 5-7, 1-6 to Argentina's Carlos Berlocq at the Brazil Open in Costa Do Sauipe.

One day after he and his partner Andre Baran were knocked out of the doubles tournament, the three-time French Open winner struggled to cope with the intense heat of the Sauipe court at the northeastern seaside resort and was no match for the world No. 74.

Kuerten has battled hip problems since he was last ranked world No. 1 eight years ago and has decided to retire after this season's French Open starting at the end of May.

"I have loved this sport and it has given me the most intense moments of my life," Kuerten said in an emotional speech over the public address system following his defeat.

"I would like to apologize. I would like to keep playing but I just cannot."

Earlier in the day, former world No. 3 Guillermo Coria defeated Italian qualifier Francesco Aldi 6-4, 7-5. It was his first ATP victory in 19 months. Coria quit the ATP tour a month later after the 2006 US Open because of struggles with his serve and confidence. Problems with his right Craig Dahl Jersey shoulder sidelined him until the end of last year when he played in two challenger tour events.

In Marseille, France, Andy Murray of Britain, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus won in straight sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Open 13.

Fourth-seeded Murray needed only 72 minutes to beat Dutch qualifier Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 6-4 while No. 5 Ferrero landed 70 percent of his first serves to defeat Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea 6-4, 6-1.

No. 6 Baghdatis slammed 10 aces to overcome 2006 winner Arnaud Clement of France 6-3, 6-4.

Murray will play Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who outlasted Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
