Magpies make Wise move

NEWCASTLE United confirmed the appointment of Dennis Wise as executive director yesterday, and also assured manager Kevin Keegan that he still has full control of the team.

The Magpies said Wise, a former England Christian Ponder Jersey midfielder who was manager of League One (third division) Leeds United, would assist the board of directors in soccer-related matters.

Newcastle also announced the appointment of Tony Jimenez as vice president of player recruitment and Jeff Vetere as technical coordinator.

The club issued a statement saying that Keegan, who was appointed two weeks ago for his second spell as manager, was in no danger of losing his position.

"This is all part of the vision that recently helped us to secure Kevin Keegan's return to the club as manager," Chairman Chris Mort said. "Dennis would like to move away from day-to-day football management to a board role and, with his considerable energy and intelligence, we believe he will do very well in this new position.

"With Kevin able to devote his efforts to developing and running the first team squad, Dennis, Tony and Jeff will each help us to secure success for Newcastle United at all levels and for the long term. One or two further key appointments will follow in the months ahead."

There has been strong speculation that former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer would be part of the backup team, too. But Shearer, who is working as a TV analyst for the BBC, has turned down an approach from Keegan to rejoin the club.

Keegan, who returned to the club to replace Sam Allardyce earlier this month, already has Arthur Cox, Terry McDermott and Nigel Pearson as assistants.

Wise, a key member of the Wimbledon "Crazy Gang" which won the FA Cup in 1988, took over at Leeds from Kevin Blackwell in October 2006 but could not prevent the club being relegated to the third tier of English soccer for the first time.
