While they held a whispered consultation Mrs. Theodore appeared at the front door with an armful of newspapers. Deliberately she laid them down one by one on the porch floor and the porch steps, and then down the path to the very feet of her mystified callers.

二人が小声で相談していると、夫人が新聞を抱えて玄関に現れた。その新聞を玄関と玄関への上り口に丁寧に敷くと、狐につままれたような顔をした二人の足元まで新聞を敷きながらやってきた。
