Anne wondered what sort of mother the child had, to send her to school dressed as she was. She wore a faded pink silk dress, trimmed with a great deal of cotton lace, soiled white kid slippers, and silk stockings.

slipper:ゴム草履,（かかとのついた）スリッパ

こんな服を着せて学校に送り出すとは、妹の母親はどんな人だろうとアンは思った。着ているシルクの服は色あせたピンク色で綿のレースがたくさんついているし、白い子ども用の靴は汚れ、そこにシルクのストッキングを履いている。
